Has the Roy Keane Revolution Ended?

Have been a Sunderland follower (as opposed to supporter) for a few years now and thought things were looking up for them for a bit after the arrival of Keane. However, losuing three nil to Preston after 35 minutes at time of writing is hardly promotion form. Loks like he's in afor a long hard season. Has brought in some decent players who should be too good for most of the opposition in the Championship so was expecting good things.

I don't really understand how so many people EXPECTED him to do well when he is unproven as a manager. Great Player doesn't necessarily mean Great Manager,in fact, it's often not the case.

He's Unproven so, he has a tough task to do very well.

Andy Gray put it well in his book.

"Great Players often don't make Great Managers as a great player doesn't have to think about the game, it comes naturally but a Great manager is the one that thinks the most"

Play a lot of games in that league, no team comes without losing a few away games or a lot in some cases.

10 points off top 3 off playoff, wouldnt write them or anyone else off yet.

Fair enough but Keane was one of the most intelligent footballers I have ever seen. He could read a game perfectly. It's what set him apart from the likes of Gerrard who will always try something spectacular like a long range shot or the killer through ball when a simple six yard pass could be more effective.

Yeh, but you can't know whether or not that was just natural or that he really thought about it.
I think Keano will be a great manager, but I think it'll be a couple of years before he is even close to being a good manager.

Agreed. Keane OUT. I suggest a boycott.

    ^^ You've already used your "get x out" ironic-overreaction-for-a-point card gimmick :)

Personally I hope he is a disastrous failure at Sunderland. It'll be the best lesson he ever learns.

I actually think roy keane has does a decent job in a short space of time. When he was appointed he only had a few days to bring in players and some of those I would imagine are short term and not long term to his plans. Sunderland squad before keane took over was a very poor one at that, you only had to look at there premier league record and they struggled in the championship as well with the same squad near enough. I honestly don’t think half the players that are there are good enough and keane will be quick to dispose of them if his reputation is anything to go buy. Keane is unproven has a manager so you can't expect miracles at sunderland its first job, but i think he will do a good job provided he is given the time. I wouldn't expect to much to happen this season, but wait until next season when he has a summer who bring who he wants and come august he will the a squad of players who he believes cam get Sunderland promoted no doubt. Its not time to judge sunderland or roy keane this season. I know it’s too early to write of the season, but if I was sunderland supporter I would be happy just to avoid the drop. The championship is a tough league and everyone knows that. We could all pick up to 10 teams who could easily get automatic promotion.

Eh... you saw Sunderland before he came along, right? Being 3-0 down to Preston after 35 minutes in probably an improvement! After all, it could be worse. You could be a Leeds fan, and be 3-0 down at home to Stoke!

    LOL!

At least sunderland are away from home too...Leeds are at home

Keane said from the start its going to be a long hard season. I got the feeling from his comments when he arrived that they will push for pormotion naturally enough this year but that it may take another year or so to get promoted.

That would suit me considering they'd only won one and lost four before he took over. Took McCarthy two yers to get back into the Premiership, first year went out on penalties to eventual play-off winners in the semis and then following year they pissed the Championship, would be haoppy eith a play-off spot and then anything's possible

Either way, one result isn't a true reflection upon his ability as a manager. I'm just looking at the table there are only 3 points between sunderland (17th) and Southampton (9th). It was always going to be a big task to pull together decent preformances from a team that finished last year with a record low points tally. I feel that there is more leeway in club management, so give the guy at least 6 months and see what happens. Good luck to him!

Keane has only been in management a wet weekend. Nobody can have serious expectations of him yet. In fact, Sunderland should probably not have taken a chance on him - except that he's probably upped the gate a bit, they're not investing wisely.

Everybody needs a learning curve, and to be fair, starting at Sunderland is a fairly steep one.

I think Sunderland is perfect for him. They are a big club with ambitions, plenty of support and Im guessing more finance than your average Championship team. He gets all this without the intense magnification of the Premiership. If after 2/3 years he hasnt produced he will have no excuses.

unless you have had access to the interview he gave for the job, and the same of any other candidate you can't really make that statement.

all this is useless speculation, its the end of the season that matters, not yesterday's result.

McCarthy won the championship with a "sh*ite" team.

A couple of bad results , not too much to worry about. The championship is a tough league where pretty much every team can beat each other. There is plenty of time for teams struggling to sort it out. I will admit i will be extremely happy if they get another bad result tomorrow night though :)

Much too early to tell. I suspect Roy has what it takes to become a good manager, however he has no experience and in managment experience counts for a lot. The experience not to make the same mistakes again and again. Lets hope he learnt a lesson last week, for his sake and for Sunderlands.

Who gives a rats ass about Sunderland? Apart from the legions going out buying their shirts and donning "SUPER FAN NUMBER ONE!" Been following them jayzus the last 2 weeks. Gotta love what a good PR company can do though. Keep flying the journos over Niall.

it's not in Roy Keane's vocabulary - the word 'fail'.

Keane said himself he never played with glory in mind, he played with a fear of losing, that's what set him apart from so many others.

You can put your house on Keane that he'll do all he can with Sunderland and give it 110%. Whether or not the players will put in the same work-rate week in week out is a different question.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

If keane isnt successful it will be down to the fact he either cant motivate his players probaly, or tactically isnt good enough. Same as evry other manager.

I love the way Keane somehow cant get the blame for anything in the eyes of Irish United fans. When ever we qualified for a tornument it was because single handedly dragged us there, but when we didnt make it "it cos the rest of the players arent good enough"

Seems to of carried on into his management career.

Another defeat tonight . They need to get some draws under their belt and make it to January and sign some decent defenders I feel.

To be fair Stan is managing an International side with limited oppertunities to lose if you know what I mean.

Over a season any team's form can slip. If they start winning again all will be forgiven im sure?!?

Anyone know what PR company it was?
I asked this in the PR board. They've been unusually quiet since...

What an absolute load of boll ox.

In fairness Ireland got to WC2002 because Keane put in some of the best performances Ive ever seen in some of the vital qualifying games when all else around him where bottling it.

Best Irish player ever imo. I think he is a model to be an excellent manager his tactical knowledge is excellent and he should be able to motivate players seeing as he has been doing that as United captain for years. I'll be very surprised if he isnt a success.

Needs to mould the team into the way he wants them to play, every manager when they join a club usually get a honey moon period but you cant start calling for his name after that, needs to move on a few players and bring in his own, also a few of the decent players they have are on injury list

bottling it? So all the players who scored goals, when given made class saves, they all bottled it?

    Of course.

Ciaran, i thought they drew last night?

There is no link which says either way that a good player will or wont make it as a manager - i am not a keane fan and i am not a sunderland fan so i dont particularlly care what happens to them - but i said in a previous thread about his signings and that i thought they were all poor and that gave me the impression that he wasnt going to be the greatest manager of all times.

Sunderland sucked big time last year so they should have had no expectation of promotion, they played some of the worst football i have seen in the prem so they should have been prepared for a tough campaign

Keane hasnt the experience to get them out of the rout and they arent showing much organisation - even if they havent the confidence or ability to control and win games at least he should have organised them into a hard to beat/play against unit
