You need a special type of network lead called a crossover cable and then a few minutes with google.

If you don't have that cable, you can connect them via your broadband router. Google 'setting up a home network'.

You can buy a crossover cable or make on yourself. Its like this. Have both computers got network cards?

Yes it is possible. You'll need a crossover cable (rather than a standard network patch cable) and enable "file and printer sharing" on both pc's.
What OS's are on the machines?

    EDIT: *Must type faster*:)

Well then you should be able to just use the networking wizard when they are connected, it should be straightforward.
