    I currently have eircom broadband..

And the bogstandard blue netopia caymen broadband router box (cables, not wireless)..

I am running 2 computers off it..

The phoneline goes into the netopia.. netopia goes by ethernet to a small hub..

The 2 computers are also plugged into the hub by ethernet

Both computers can access the net..

However when I play a game such as quake AND the other computer access even so much as a webpage at the same time I get a HUGE ping spike..

Any way round this? help much appreciated..

Please don't move this to broadband forum, people on this forum can prob answer this.. I hope..

I think 2 machines trying to use the same internet connection at the same time is going to cause a problem no matter what set up you have. I can't think of anyway around it.

not at all.. I've been to flats where 4 people have been on at the same time, browsing, playing games, no problem at all... I'm sure it's just something small ..

Get a new Modem /router and remove the 1. **** modem 2 hub.

Get a program called net-limiter, install it on the machine that wont be playing games and just limit how much bandwith it is allowed using. Pages will just take longer to load.

This depends a bit on the actual speed of your internet connection, and for games the upload speed is quite important... ;)

Your hub must be the problem. If your router is the 4-port version, there's no need for a hub, just put a network cable between each PC and the router. However, if your Netopia gadget has only 1 output, you will need to replace it with a 4-port ADSL-modem/router, that has NAT and DHCP, which would assign a different internal IP to each PC (such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 etc.).
Open a DOS-box (click Start/Run and type in cmd and hit OK), then in that DOS-box type in: ipconfig /all and hit Enter.
Write down what it says after: IP Address
Do the same on the other PC. If they have the same IP address, there's your conflict.

I think you are all missing the point except bazolsen, if he is on the 1meg line with 128k upload no amount of routers and hubs are going to make a difference.

To stop lag spikes in games 256k upload minimun with a great router or 512k plus.

Thats what i was thinking  Why not just get net limiter and limit the bandwith the other pc has? People are over complicating, i have the exact same problem, im only on a 1meg line and i just limit my moms pc.
