Squarepushers latest album HELLO EVERYTHING sounds like a soundtrack to a wacky sci-fi film, although I haven't listened to it a lot, it sounds just as good as the rest of his oeuvre.:o

what do yee all think of it?

the rules for new releases in Ireland.

if it's something you don't want to buy - then it'll be out the Friday before the UK release date.

if it's something you want to buy - then it'll be out the Friday after the UK release date or sometimes even the following week. In a number of cases the staff in the record shop won't know when it's coming out and it'll take weeks to come in - example Scott Walker 'The Drift'.

as a result I buy the majority of new releases online.

Picked this up the other day. Only listening to it now. The bonus 3" is fairly crappy but I'm really enjpying the main album. More later.

Got the album on saturday. Only managed to listen to it a couple of times but first impressions are good. Some really nice jazzy instrumental stuff, and the IDM/electronic stuff has a nice balance between tunefulness and the usual Squarepusher manic insanity :)

I think he's focused a lot more on the tunes than the insanity this time. Everything just sounds nice as opposed to barmy. Loving the last track, it's really sinister. I was reading a ghost story while listening to it last night and I scared the bejaysus out of myself :o

    Lol :D

Must try and get the album, is it like Hard Normal Daddy at all? That was my favourite of his, I loved the whole oddly subdued atmosphere of the record.

I've only heard Hard Normal Daddy once and as far as I remember, this new one is a lot more accessible sounding. I wasn't a fan of Hard Normal Daddy but I also wasn't really into Squarepusher at the time. There's a few samples of the new album here if you're interested.

    Here's a short review I wrote...

Squarepusher, aka Tom Jenkinson, is a one-man electronics veteran, at once composer, bass player and producer. “Hello Everything” is his tenth album to date.

The great variety of moods, sounds and textures explored by Jenkinson is a prominent feature of the album. Beginnning with ‘Hello Meow’, a burning up-tempo track which instantly brings the listener into the blurry world of an arcade racing game. He drops the tempo down and then shifts into the mellow, sleazy blues of ‘Theme From Sprite’, swapping the electronic bleeps for a drum kit, acoustic guitar and his beloved 6-string bass.

He shows a tender, soulful side in ‘Bubble Life’, which contrasts with the experimental, rising-pitch weirdness of ‘Vacuum Garden’. ‘Planetarium’ is dream-like, layered with all manner of synth sounds and Jenkinson’s customary drum n bass pulse. ‘Circlewave 2’ is mostly an acoustic guitar piece, with echoes of Radiohead in its arrangement and harmony.

In an essay from 2004, Jenkinson mentions the influence of the drum machines and samplers he uses in creating music. It is this empathy for his gadgets which produces wonderfully crafted pieces like ‘The Modern Bass Guitar’, a frantic, smile-inducing 5 minutes of chaotic beats, or ‘Rotate Electrolyte’, another intense track exploring a textured conversation between different beats and clicks.

With pieces like these, Jenkinson has created another album of music which will appealing to the entire spectrum of electronic music fans, from the raving pill-heads to the chin-stroking intellectuals.
