Is there a way to copy a load of mp3's, all of them with various different bitrates, from a folder into itunes and while doing so changing the bitrate so that they all have the same bitrate?

And what's the best bitrate to rip CDs to?

There is no point in transcoding mp3s. It's a lossy format and you will not gain anything from converting a 128KBps mp3 to 192KBps. With each transcode you will lose quality as it's already compressed.

Best bitrate is up to you really. Quality vs Space is a factor, obviously the higher the quality the bigger the files. I use EAC and Lame to rip V0 that's 256KBps VBR I think.

Personally, I wouldn't rip at anything less than 192KBps and would use VBR.

Here's a guide for setting up EAC and Lame to rip your cds. http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm

Thanks for that, I'll look into it. Just wondering if anybody can answer my original question as to whether or not you can do this in iTunes?
