    hi guys,
recently posted here about a new media center build,
well everything has arrived and have started to assemble,
took me a while to get power sorted but seems to be ok now as in switching on, restarting and the leds all seem to be working,
however, i bought a thermaltake mozart case and the supplied leads for the front connections ie usb, speakers, and hi def sound dont fit the socets on my motherboard !
    its driving me nuts,
my motherboard specs says it will take a ac'97 but cannot find it on board ?
the usb plug from the case for the front ubs's wont fit either,
i know i have waffled a bit but any help would be hugely appreciated guys,
    thanks in advance

    p.s,
the usb cable coming from front of case is an 8 pin
    2 red, 2 black, 2 green and 2 white,
whereas the socket on the mobo is a 9 pin ?

The connectors can vary not sure about the audio if your motherboard doesn't have the on-board headers for it then you are out of luck I think..

As for the USB headers there are various pin outs used which are catalogued here, amongst them you can see the example C which may work as a guide to putting it together (disregard the snd-gnd pin as the pin opposite it is not used).

Don't you have the manual for your motherboard as it would give the exact pin outs ?

hi again and thanks for your help.
i have been looking here and it seems that my mobo is made by gigabyte and the usb lead has an intel plug on it,
i am gonna have to take it apart and mock up something,
so hopefully i can do that without blowing anything up !

the other prob i have is a lead coming from front of case,
    it has 2 plugs on,
one says hd audio and other says ac'97
i cant find anything on motherboard to suit ?
should i just leave these hanging or are there any other options ?
thanks a mil for your help

as above throw up some pics, or even just give the model of the board

    hi again guys,
    working on some pics,
mobo is Columbia IV (GA-8SIML) Ver 1.2 µATX motherboard
    made by gigabyte
did a search on gigabyte site for that model number and got ga-siml.
sadly on the manual for that board it has 10 pins on usb header !
    bloody nuts !
the post from 8t8 looks right but the usb plug from my case was wired like that but still no joy !
    doing my head in,
thinking of doing without the front usb at the moment,
will persevere for the time being though,
    thanks guys

They describe it as ten pin by including the area where there is no pin. The web page for the GA-8SIML is here on Gigabytes site in case you got the wrong one.

The actual connector that would plug into the board would be 10 pin in terms of size but only 9 of those pins would have holes in the connector, the 10th is just a blank space so you cannot put the connector in the wrong way.

The manual from the above Gigabyte link gives away the location of the front panel audio connector see page 8 (note said connector is only present on v1.1 or greater of your board) the connector is located between the SPDIF and CD_IN, page 18 gives the pin out for the front panel audio connector (this may be of some help).

Page 20 contains the pin out for the USB header which you should be able to use to hook it up correctly I hope.

    {If thats no help it seems Antec cases use the same 8 pin connection that is on your case, this post describes in detail on how to correctly connect them. This post is perhaps a little easier to read but says the same thing.}

    thanks again for your reply,
i saw that on the gigabyte website but it does not match my board,
    my layout is like ,

but the gigabyte site shows mine as

top right hand corner on gigabyte site is listed as power but that pin is missing on my mobo ?

    i am totally stumped,
have been searchinh for hours over the last few das but no joy as yet,
the only 9 pin layout i have found does not match mine,
    as in

    2xgnd
    2xdata-
    2xdata+
    2xpower

    will keep looking though
    thanks a million again

i hope this helps a bit guys,
    thanks a million

Hmm that is confusing your connection looks exactly like pinout C on the USB site I linked to but as you mention it didn't work.

Also the picture of the GA-8SIML motherboard of Gigabytes website clearly shows the connection from the manual in the screenshot but yours is different to that.

On further inspection it appears this Packard Bell version has been altered as the USB header in the picture you supplied to us is visible here on the Packard bell site.

Whatever way Packard Bell have rewired the USB front panel connection is non-standard maybe ? I'm not sure what they are doing as according to the USB man site the yellow & white wires are used for the D- & D+ connections but the way that connector from your old case is wired does not correspond to any of the layouts on the USB man site.

Are the front panel connections in the case removable check for screws near the connectors what you could do is pull it out of the case and rip the old connectors from the old case and put them into the new case - problem solved :)

    {someone with the same problem as you unfortunately they gave up as well, they did a bit more detective work & found the PB forums with more folk and the same problem unresolved}

hi again and thanks a million,
    its a tough one alright,
    pain in the ass !
i have sent gigabyte an email asking for usb header pin assignment so fingers crossed,
might also try sending packard bell and email although not sure if they will reply,
if no luck there i will come back to you and try to use old harness on new case,
    thanks a million again
