Cant get both both dvd drives to work!!!!!!

Got a new nec 7173-a 18x dvd writer to compliment my 16x nec writer. Simply took out my old cd writer and put in the new drive in its place and plugged in the cables.

Turned the rig back on and it wouldnt pick up either drive, looked in device manager and not there. plugged out one drive, turned it back on and it works perfectly. seems to only want to pick up one drive for some reason. I am using the two drives through the same IDE port with a 1-2 ide cable as i have 2 hard drives on the other. This was never an issue when i had the cd writer and the dvd writer with the exact same set up!.

Does anybody have any suggestions cause ive tried everything, is it possibly something to do with, slave/master configuration? any help would be greatly appreciated,

    Cheers

could be the slave/master thing, maybe its your PSU, do you have enough power to run to drives?

Good choice. NEC are great. Looks like you have both on master or slave tbh.

Power supply wasn't an issue with the two previous drives, so dont think it would be that, as for the slave/master how do you set it, is it in the bios? because i cant do it in device manager as the drives dont show up

You have to change the jumpers on the back of the drives themselves.

The first one should be set to master and the second slave.

You set it up by the jumper settings on the rear of the drives. One as Master (MA) and one as Slave (SL), Master drive would go on the first connector, slave on the second. Picture below to help you out.

Or just move them both to "cable select"

I had both of mine set to cable select on the new rig and Windows couldn't see either although the BIOS saw both. Couldn't figure it out, unplugging the second drive allowed Windows to see the first one but I had to set them to Master/Slave to get them both recognised.

 Oh, so maybe my advise was wrong, sorry :D

Well it doesn't really make sense as the two drives in this pc are both on cable select and work fine.

Ya, i've often seen them both on cable select & work fine, in fact my last rig is set-up that way. Didn't realise there can be issues with it sometimes.

johnnycool, I read something in my motherboard [Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo Pro] about IDE ports not working if cables were connected to front USB connectors on the chassis. It was a terrible excuse of a translation and very unclear. It would harldy be an IRQ conflict, for the little I know about the topic?

I have the same problem. Have a Philips CD-ROM drive and a Sony DVD rewriter. Had to share IDE1 between DVD rewriter and HDD as IDE2 and IDE3 are not recognising anything. I've been through the jumper configuration a few times. I also tried replacing the ATA cable. No luck.

I changed the jumpers as advised to match the master and slave tags on the cable and it worked fine. Both drives were recognised on first boot up :).

One thing though, my rig seems slightly unstable since the whole debacle, possibly due to tinkering about, hopefully not psu :(.

Any how cheers for all the advice, much appreciated.

    What make/model is the PSU?

I have seen it before also when drives are on cable select. They don't work on some machines and work on others. I usually just use master/slave anyway. When you say slightly unstable what exactly do you mean?
