I see that Kieran Fallon has been given permission to ride Yeats in the Melbourne Cup. After treading his quotes he seems to be very upbeat and enthusiastic about the race. What to do the regular posters on this board think of Yeats chances in the race. He is available at 7 and 8-1 for the race. He really is a cracker of a horse he got beat last time out at the Curragh by John Oxxs mare Kastoria. Im thinking of having a small bet at the current odds.
Who are the main dangers in this race etc all opinions welcomed.

whats the story with young mick and the melbourne?

is it still a "50/50 chance" that he'll be going there?

if mick is running best believe i'm backing it each way, even though 2m is longer than he ever

I was actually just gonna start a post on the Melbourne festival. Im going to the Melbourne Cup day and was wondering if anyone has any tips/suggestions for any of the races. For the cup, i currently cant personally see past Yeats. I think he should be too strong for this field. Antone have any other selections for the races on this day? Afterall, its always nicer to go with a few tips than not :)

I'll be backing Railings myself. Will be a much bigger price here than down under though.

I see he has dropped from 14s to 10s on PP so you could be right. I may go e/w on that one and Yeats for the win. Never sure about a horse that has to travel such a long distance tho like Yeats has to.

I went in 2003. Unfortunately, I never saw a horse as the crowds were so big I could not get near the track. I backed the Godolphin sure-thing Mamool and he bombed (injured a leg was the excuse).
There are a few other days racing later in the week and they were much more enjoyable.

The ground is usually hard but with a heavy grass cover. I wouldn't be in a rush to back Yeats.

You must have gone to Paddy Powers Steve. He's 33-1 in Ladbrooks. Just backed him...

Disappointed by the lack of support for railings...maybe it will come later but I'm keeping my bet small as a result.

This thread is probably not the right place to post this comment, but I dont like betting in races outside Britain and Ireland to be honest. (Such as the Melborune Cup or Breeders Cup etc)

Its difficult enough to find a winner in Britain or Ireland, and these are horses/tracks/conditions/jockeys/trainers we are familiar with from watching every day. While I look forward to the race, I wont have a punt. I find it extremely difficulty to research these type of races.

I did have a (losing) bet in this years Arc mind you.

Much like Britain and Ireland Wayne we can research the form of all the contenders. Believe me, we are much more in the know in the Melbourne or Breeders Cup than we are in a Wolverhampton Seller.

Fair enough, your example of a seller at Wolverhapton is always going to be a tricky one to figure out unless you have some solid info - but the point I'm trying to make is that it takes time to get familiar with horses styles, jockey styles, trainer tactics etc. This comes from form study, but more importantly from race watching, reading interviews, and just generally building up a sound knowledge of the sport, and the parties involved.
I find that I don't have that 'gut' feeling with the foreign races, as I'm not familiar enough with the scene.

Don't get me wrong, Its just a personal preference, and form outside of the UK or Ireland is something I have not cracked yet unfortunately. Fair play to anyone who can, and I hope yous get a few winners too!

A Japanese 1-2. Delta Blues wins. Compensation for Hearts Cry but this race...and Yeats, was all hype.

    Goodnight!

I agree with Wayne when it comes to betting on these international races, I rarely ever get involved. It almost impossible to correlate the different form from different regions of the world. How are you supposed to tie up the Australian, European and Asian form, not to mention take into account the different track and ground types.

Actually I was going to say it last night but I was knackered...there is a lot to be said for what Wayne was saying about foreign racing, especially after that result last night. However, the form of all the horses is there to see and it's up to your own personal race reading to decipher how the form ties in. Last night's race was a bit of an odd Melbourne Cup as they never seemed to settle mid race and almost went helter skelter from the gates. They're never races to plough into but we can't argue with the quality of them.

Did any of those who stayed up see fallon's ride on Polar Bear in the race after the big one, it was one of the best you will see from him.
