Spotted mythbusters last night and they ran a old diesel merc on un-refined chip oil, someone does that here, don't they?

How would you stop it going hard in the cold?

Though a coffee filter to get rid af the chips!!

They were testing "miracle" fuel efficency extenders, magnets and lead pipes and acetone and stuff. They kinda had to do one where they got something to work, so they ran on unprocessed chip oil.

Had a Ford Courier Van running on SVO..ran very well.

How would you stop it going hard in the cold?

...use a heated tank, heated fuel pipes, heated fuel filter etc. all heated off the engine coolant.

i think the second link i posted contains everything you need to know about diesels running on chip oil, also they have a good biodiesel section too
    http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make.html

depends on your engine for svo vs your ability/effort needed to make bio?????

(Where do you have a good source of SVO?) Edit:

Ignore that, you buy it from supermarkets, I meant Waste vegtable Oil if anyone uses it

A guy stopped me in traffic 20 minutes ago to tell me that he buys WVO from some place in Oldcastle for 35c per litre ( minimum 1000 litres) and filters it using sewage sacks.

how often to randomers stop you in traffic to tell you random things??!!!
i presume he runs his car off it too??
I know a place in oldcastle that gives it away for free (a chipper, which narrowes it down to about 1 person, maybe its because he knows my mate.) i wonder if millbrook foods would sell it. they should produce a lot.

im sure there are plenty of places around that are only too happy to hand off their wvo, just make sure to have adequate storage, its messy feckin stuff.

Its Milbrook foods, yeah. Couldn't remember the name til you said it.

I ahve a wee sticker on the back of the van saying "powered by vegetable oil" and "ecocar.ie". You would not believe the stuff that happens. People follow me to my destinatiion, or stop me in traffic to talk to me about it, because the Ecocar logo makes them think I supply the kits. Or they notice the smell and are intrigued.

    This is soooo cool!! :)

What do Customs think of this? In France you would go to jail for running your diesel on McDonalds refuse, because there is no tax on it !!!!!!!!

There is an exemption, but you have to pay VAT and buy 1,000 litres at a time from an approved supplier.

You could, of course, keep a log of the oil you use, and *ahem* volunteer to pay the VAT and duty yourself. It's entirely self-policing, though.

if you are going to do this all the time it's much easier to just pay the VAT and get the 1000litres than going to Lidl/Tesco and buy crateloads of the stuff each week!

Where and in what would you keep 1000 litres without it getting hard ?

    Central heating oil tank.

I have a diesel Citroen running around 30% blend of veg oil. No modifications to the car. Do a very low mileage in short runs so the I've dismissed the idea of installing a kit for the time being.

    Central heating oil tank.

.......thats what I figured ! Sounds messy though. Do they arrive out with a truck and fill up for you or what ?

I guess for the saving its worth more than a little aggrevation !

    MercMad,

My plan is to hire a van for the day and drive the 1000l tankto my house. You then have a small pump with pumps it across into an existing tank, located near the driveway.

When refilling you bring back the delivered 1000l tank to get your refund on it/refill it.

The pump is also used to fill your car unless you can gravity fill it.

It's worth it to save the environment!
