NEW YORK - A small aircraft crashed into a high-rise on the Upper East Side, setting off a fire and startling New Yorkers, police said. There were conflicting reports on whether the aircraft was a small plane or a helicopter.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows. Video from the scene showed at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or injuries.

It was not immediately known if it was a terrorist act.

FAA and airport authority say it was a small fixed wing airplane. No indication of terrorist threat.

Fire services said it was a helicopter and witness on BBC now saying its a small fixed wing aircraft

It flew into a residential building and is looking unlikely to be a terrorist attack.

The reports on sky said that it was not foggy. It also has eye witness accounts that it was a small aircraft, not a helicopter.

Sky News says they've been informed that all airports are still functioning as normal, so that's reassuring.

I do believe it was an airplane; one of my friends from New York IM-ed me to tell me the news.
    I'm glad it wasn't a terrorist attack.

    Hah.
At least two people have died after an aircraft crashed into the side of an apartment building in Manhattan, New York.

The building is on fire and people are believed to be trapped by the "very heavy smoke".

The aircraft is believed to be fixed wing - probably a small plane - and it crashed into the building on the Upper East Side, on East 72nd Street and York Avenue.

Authorities have said the crash is unlikely to be a result of terrorism.

At least one apartment on the 19th floor and two or three apartments on the 20th floor are ablaze.

The building is up to 50 storeys high and the smoke from the fire can be seen from seven miles around.

A witness told Sky News: "It's very frightening. It brings back a lot of disturbing memories."

Another witness told Fox News the scene is "pandemonium".

He said: "There was a lot of horror and terror on the street when it happened. It was a loud explosion and I couldn't tell if it was the sound of a bomb... then i saw the black smoke and people were running and screaming."

One woman, who declined to give her name, said: "There's huge pieces of debris falling. There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."

The building is believed to be made up of over 180 apartment, many of which sell for over $1m.

We don't know yet, the FBI said that there's "no indication" -- that's at present. We'd know it was terrorist if it was a passenger plane, but not necessarily with a light aircraft.

I'm sure we'll find out shortly anyway.

I'm presuming that if it was a terrorist strike, we'd know about it by now. Also, why on earth would you fly into an apartment block?

The good side to Sept 11th happening is that they know exactly what to do now in these circumstances.

"No indication" just means no one group has claimed responsibility or one has and is being validated still. When somthing like this happens, believe it or not, hundreds of "amateur terrorist groups" claim responsibility and it takes a while to check, there are codewords etc that have to be validated.

Who needs CNN when you have boards.ie to here the top news as it happens eh?

There's no indication of terrorism, but they have military aircraft up patroling some cities as a precaution. The airports in NYC are still operating.

I wonder how much coverage this would be getting outside of local news pre 9/11?

There was multiple aircraft-building crashes before 9/11

Not necessarily, remember the London bombs? That was attributed to power failures originally.
Also, why on earth would you fly into an apartment block?
    If I'm a terrorist: I don't need to answer.
If I'm not a terrorist: I didn't do it deliberately. It was an accident.
So surely an answer is not required for that question?

I'm confident there were. I'm also confident that they didn't have international news agencies screeching to a halt to make it their top story and threads popping up all over the internet with updates every few minutes. God knows the larger scale accident in France today didn't.

They went out of the playoffs only a couple of days ago. Pretty sad.

Could it have been suicide then I wonder?

I'd say it would have gotten a fair amout of coverage outside of local news pre-911. I mean you'd always hear about a bus crashing in France, or someone falling down a well in Egypt, so why not a plane crashing?

    Terrorists.

    Wasn't terrorists, wasn't suicide.

RIP Cory Lidle (and the passenger of course).

Was Cory Lidle definitely confirmed as the pilot?

Not confirmed as the pilot, but he did get his pilots license during the last off-season (almost a year ago). It was his plane as well, ironically he was quoted online a while back as saying he chose it for its extensive safety features.

Has a son who just turned 6 too.

Authorities believe Lidle was the pilot.

Interesting article on Lidle from last season (he pitched for the Phillies) about flying.

    Hubris?

"Flying a plane isn't dangerous at all," Lidle said. "It's not like there are a bunch of people up there not knowing what they're doing."

Man thats awful stuff. Terribly sad.

    Cheers for the link.

Reports are saying it might have been fuel trouble. I saw Lidle pitch last Saturday for the Yankees, he was pretty crap. Sad way to go.

Now that I think about it, wasn't there some rumor going out a couple months ago... something about terrorists and airplanes in the US? Like some new thing happening... Or did that have something to do with bombs on the airplanes? I don't know for sure... but that rings a bell.
