    Hi guys, very new to all this and some of the terminology is baffling me :)

    So what do the following terms mean

    UTG
    UTG +1 (+2)
    Tribeca (is this a poker site?)

    I'll add more as they come into my head lol. Thanks!

    utg= under the gun, player seated directly to the left of the big blind, and first to act preflop.

    +1 is the player to the left of the utg, +2 is then to his left.

    Tribeca is a poker network, ppp and other sites are "skins" on this network, so while you're playing on paddy power, you could be playing a guy on victor or boyles.

    UTG = Under the Gun - First to act in a hand. Person after the big blind.
    UTG+1 = the person to act after UTG.
    Tribeca = A network of poker sites. Sites on the Tribeca network include, Paddy Power, Green Joker Poker, Blue Square, Doyles Room, Victor Chandler.

    Some more terminology that you might be wondering about.

    SB= small blind
    BB= big blind
    CO= cutoff, the last person to act before the button
    LAG= loose aggressive, a style of playing
    TAG=tight aggressive, a different style of playing

    There are loads of other ones that are obvious once you know them, but until you do are a bit mystifying. We all learn somewhere.

    UTG + 1 the person to the left of UTG
    Tribeca is a poker network with a lot of sites connected to it such as Paddy Power Poker, victor Chandler Poker ,our very own Green Joker Poker and many others.

    check out http://www.poker1.com/mcu/mculib_dictionary.asp for any other queries you may have. All the terminology can be confusing at first :)

    Edit: I guess I have to brush up on my speed typing skills

    I remember when I first started reading this forum I hadn't a clue what utg meant, or what the bubble was. So young and naive.

    more useful definitions:

    A 'shark' is a very bad poker player, so called because they haven't evolved since the days of the dinosaurs. Always try to play with a table full of 'sharks'. You usually find 'sharks' at the higher limits like 20/40. You'll be able to spot 'sharks' easily as they usually have very large amounts of cash at the table to compensate for their poor poker skills. Generally when a 'shark' makes a large bet, he is bluffing. This is a good rule of thumb and will win you much money.

    A 'fish' is an excellent poker player and should be avoided at all costs. The term 'fish' derives from the earliest poker schools, as we all know, fish swim in schools. Avoid tables full of 'fish' as they will undoubtedly take all your money. You can often recognise 'fish' at the table as they tend to play every hand - this is because they are so skilled that they can and will outplay you on every hand. 'Fish' often also buy in for the minimum on cash tables - again, this is because they are so skilled that they know they will soon have all the money on the table. When a 'fish' makes a large bet, always fold.

    A 'random number generator' is what controls the shuffle on an internet-based poker site. This 'RNG' is totally transparent and always been audited and verified by celebrity poker experts such as Nick Leeson, Mickey Mouse or the guy with Tourettes from Big Brother. This is why you can always be 100% confident that the shuffle on a poker site is totally random, especially when your pocket aces get cracked 6 times in a row.

    'fu'. This means "fantastic, unbelievable" and should always be typed into the chatbox when somebody wins a hand against you in order to congratulate them. It is considered most impolite not to type this when someone wins a hand against you in a showdown.

    I hope this helps and gives a flavour of the exciting world of online poker that you are about to enter. I'm always available to help with any other terms that you may have confusion with.

    MUBS - If everytime you have a set you are terrified that someone has made a straight by holding some unlikely combination like 6-4 or 8-5 etc, and you allow it to affect your betting, then you are suffereing from Monsters Under the Bed Syndrome.
    In other words you start imagining your opponents always have horrible holdings which beat you.

    absolutely correct usage of 'fu', well done.

    You're a fast learner!! Or, as we poker types say, a 'donk'!

    of course when someone types 'fu' into the chat box to congratulate you on having taken all their money, it is then correct poker etiquette to reply 'stfu'

    (sincere thanks for understanding)

    so stfu sir!!

    One I've never been able to figure out, and I bet I regret asking this:

    When a poster replies FYP to another post, what does it mean?

    It means I have Fixed Your Post. In this case they will have quoted a reply but altered something either subtly or significant, but either way will have completely changed the meaning of the post they were modifying.
