    Hi all

Just a note to let anyone interested know that the speed limit on the N8 from Watergrashill to Fermoy has been reduced to 80 kph!

Also the Gatzo van has been camped between Rcormac and Fermoy for the last few days...Good to see the tax dollars being used so well:rolleyes:

Finally there is a sign outside Fermoy indicating that the default speed limit is 80 kph...WTF is a default speed limit??...Gonna check with the coco to see if relevant by laws etc were passed....

It's no longer the N8 due to the new M8 so the default speed limit is indeed 80 km/h.

If you feel that removing national route status from a road bypassed by a motorway (and a tolled one at that) is misguided, write to your TDs and the National Roads Authority. A letter to the relevant council, which is now in charge of the speed limit and maintenance of the road, would also be a good idea.

Bloody silly is'nt it? I use the old N8 into Fermoy and carried on at 100 khp regardless! Better watch my step.

    Mike.

Presumably the limit is reduced to further encourage you to use the tolled motorway.

well, if the new road is the M8 i dont see why the old N8 has to be downgraded to a R road or whatever it now is EXCEPT that I imagine the NRA wont pay for its upkeep anymore (which is odd given that the new road is "owned" by the Toll Road company....)

All R-roads (and L-roads), unless the council says otherwise, have a default speed limit of 80kph. The idea is presumably that these roads (theoretically) should be of a lower standard than N-roads and therefore should be subject to a lower speed limit.

There is some crazy instances of detrunked N-roads getting this speed limit. For example, try the R445 between M7 J10 and Newbridge for a big example. A dual carrigeway with hard shoulder and wide central median. Very quiet (for a DC). 80 kph speed limit as its an R-road. Arguably detrunked N-roads should be simply given a higher N-number instead of an R-number, but that's not current policy (its been c.1993 since we last looked at the numbering system.)

You can put a 100 kph speed limit on an R-road - but any council doing this is liable to the charge of "promoting speeding" and "promoting dangerous driving". Very few votes have been got out of raising speed limits...

When the M1 extension opened in Dublin in 2003 the N1, which was dual carriageway in places, was designated the R132 with a 80/60 kph limit.

Why would the NRA pay for the upkeep for a road that isn't a national route?

why indeed, but surely the road doesnt need to be down-graded purely as an accounting exercise?

Oh yes it does. Otherwise every new N-road bypass would be bypassed over and over again by the councils.
