    Winter is arriving.

    How often do people play.

Myself I usually take a couple of months off and then I just go to the range and work on changes on my game for a month or so before heading back to the course as I find it easier to make changes to my swing

playing in the winter can help you get a bit of practice with shots you mightn't try so much in the summer, throwing the ball in at the pin rather than chip and run etc.
but i understand completely why people don't really want to play, it can be miserable some days

I actually find that playing through the winter really keeps your touch, and it can really set you up for the next year. You don't forget silly things, and your short game can be quite sharp.

As JR says firing at the pins is something that's nice to be able to do!!

Winter does make it difficult for golfers but there is an alternative now available, a mobile golf simulator can be set up at your club/society to use and enjoy, play real golf using real golf clubs and hitting real golf balls - detailed golf swing analysis is also featured which can help fix hooks and slices and other common swing problems - see www.golfswingpro.ie for more details and give it a try.....you'll see that they have already worked with some of the best known businesses in Ireland and come highly recommended.

Trust me if you were playing last Sunday, winter is'nt arriving its here. I agree with attacking the pins, I'm not a low handicapper so ball spin is out of the question at the moment. Placing is a big advantage but unfortunately a lot of the bunkers become GUR in the winter so you can lose that aspect of the game.
Winter has its benefits but when your out there in the wind and rain, you start praying for summer.

J.R., are you been a bit harsh there!.

I'm simply making it known that this winter there may be an alternative to just sitting in and looking at the rain and wind or taking your ball out of a deep plug hole on a soddin course.

I come on the boards to see what the topics are and can I contribute, if I'm drawing from experiences in my business then I apologise for that and I'm more than happy to leave it out altogether.

    Thanks.

eh no, thats what the big smilie is for, to show it's a laugh and that i'm not bothered if you are just trying to sell something. :D

:D agreed and I'm not as uptight as it may seem:o , in reality i'm not trying to sell anything but just putting the information out there, others can make their own mind up, for some people they think it's great etc etc but others can take it or leave it -:o

on the topic of winter golf proper, the present weather is fantastic but the clear skies make it very difficult to play golf because the sun is so low in the sky, my winter golf is all about chipping and pitching and anything from 120 yards in with a pitching wedge, lob wedge etc etc, pays dividends when the spring comes - keep at the driving also:mad:

I actually found winter golf last year a real learning experience. I was playing at least once a week in the winter league, and the range 1-2 times also.

Weather aside, (this is Ireland, it doesn't just rain in the winter!), I found that making sure you had enough club was always a challenge, due to the temperature of the air, i was using maybe 2-3 clubs more. Also due to softer greens, I found that I actually had to carry the ball over or close to the flag, and the ball at times got crazy amounts of spin.

One of the skills you can really develop in the winter is hitting a ball cleanly off bad lies. A fairway that's semi-swamp in the winter disintegrates under a iron shot, so you've got to make good clean contact.
Winter golf also helps keep the old back and shoulders in trim for the spring.
Plus rained out competitions can often turn into snooker tournaments and Texas Hold'em sessions. Some of the best days in I had last winter didn't involve my clubs.

It's a lot a fun when the snow converges with the ground.

    :D:D:D

    Miss-spent youth Obni?? ;)

I was in possibly the worst run of form of my life for the last two months or so... Then played Dunmurry Springs last Friday (fantastic - highly recommend it) and Skerries today and hit the ball brilliantly for first time in ages.

Really enjoyed firing at the pins alright and just the general challenge of figuring out the things that need to be done differently.

One thing I think people underestimate in winter is the alarming effect the cool air has on your distance. I played in perfect conditions today but the low temp took about 20-25 yards carry off my drives and from 150yd I needed a completely full-blooded 7iron which is 1-2 clubs more than in warm weather.

Playing Killeen tomorrow... Nice to be playing something that resembles proper golf for the first time in what seems like an age! :D
