Anyone ever did the whole 'tourist' thing in their own city?

Am thinking of asking the g/f is she wants to explore the city we live in next weekend.
We both had a quiet one planned, and I just think the idea of booking a hotel (save on taxi fares and having fun ;) )on the Sat night and mucking about on Sat doing touristy stuff sounds cool... going to museums, tours, and other places of interest we've never been or take for granted, before hitting the tiles on a night out.
    Anyone ever done this?
If you have a b/f or g/f and they suggested this, would you think they're off their head and would you be up for it?

I think thats a great idea. I often take a day or two off in Dublin to do some of the touristy things, (the museum of natural history is really cool) and its always a good buzz. I want to do the viking splash tour too, but I've yet to find anyone else that would go on it. The wigs and viking horns seem to put people off for some reason.
Just recently I took a few days off just to do tours around the city with a relative of mine who wanted to see it, and I think I oohed and aaahed more that she did.

As for if my g/f asked to do this, yes I'd probably think she was mad, but I'd say nothing and go with it anyway.

Do the Ghost Bus Tour!! Do it!! Its a good laugh, think you may have to book a couple of days in advance though. Apart from that, we did the tourist bus thing before - thought it was well worth it. I'd never been in ChristChurch before it like :o

Yeah, I did that with the wife (then girlfriend) back in 2004. We toured around Dublin, Sligo Town (went to some the art gallery, Yeats society building and the abbey) as well as the surrounding areas of "Yeats Country" on a bus tour. It was good fun. :)

I did it myself with the missus a couple of years ago, we'd been to a good few cities worldwide and realized we'd never done Dublin (so to speak).

Take the open top bus tour round the city. Do the full loop and then use it as a kind of taxi (once you pay your pass is valid for 24hrs). We done Kilmainham Jail (excellent tour), Dublin Zoo, Jameson Distillery (also very good) followed by the Guinness Storehouse.

It was a great day but the weather was smashing so wrap up well. The Jameson tour is more informative than the Storehouse IMO, as it's guided.

Let me know how you get on.

She's a lucky girl! I would be impressed if someone went to that trouble for me. (i.e. cared whether I liked it or not!)
    Have a good weekend!:)

My friends and I do that a lot too. We come to know the downtown area as "tourist attractions", without ever having seen it ourselves. We make a day of it, exploring and stuff. It's fun.

I hope you guys' have a lovely, memorable weekend!

Sounds like a good idea. It's amazing how many Irish people haven't been to many of the big tourist attractions that our country has to offer. I've lived in Limerick for seven years and only last year visited King John's Castle and Bunratty Castle too. I was just waiting for an excuse to do it, most people are probably the same.

I've been to Dublin tons of times and never done most of the things mentioned on this thread. Never been to Christ Church or the Guinness Brewery for example.

Yeah, i did alot of that recently. I live in Limerick, did the open top bus tour, limerick city muesum, the hunt muesum was gonna do the boat tour but that is way too expensive... i want to do a walking tour of the city and i'll be happy.

Same here. Some people have lived on the island their whole lives and haven't even seen the majority of it. It's kind of sad. But it's nice to discover the beauty of your homeland. ^_^

I've done the open top tourbus in Dublin, and found it really informative. I even sang along to the bus driver's rendition of Molly Malone (cockles and mussles).

I've done the Guinness tour and The Zoo, visited the various parks and memorials/gardens. Visited Dublin Castle.. There's loads to do, and it's good fun. If you do it all in one day, you'll be nackared after it. But find a nice pub and have some Guinness. It'll end the day nicely!

    K.

What's this lark I heard about Guinness possibly being Welsh, btw?
Yeah I kinda did touristy stuff in Dublin two months ago. Tour-wise it was only okay, but we had a great time 'cause I was with fun people :)

The Viking Splash Tours are a great laugh if you like comedians, cruising around town in a boat and roaring at people. A bit of history thrown in too.

    Not really...

Although I do the bus tour, Guiness storehouse, Powerscourt gardens, etc. whenever a foreign friend comes to visit.

I never do it unless someone visits me and pesters me to come with them!

Gotta say the Guiness tour is one of the best in Ireland great visit. Then the Jameson distillery guided tour is great. AVOID the book of kells over priced and under utilised awful visit. Should also try the national gallery.

Think its great when anyone is willing to visit the sites on their door step.

I live in Toursty Kilkenny and I've never been in the Castle- I just never bothered, it looks nice enough from the outside but I say leave it to the tourists. Loads of other tourist stuff I've never visited in the city. Sure it's the same for people in other towns and cities. When you live in a place you just don't appreciate these things...

I've often brought people, visiting friends and relations, around Dublin on an informal walking tour. I've put a website up of photos I've taken around Dublin:

    http://homepage.eircom.net/~flukey/DublinCity.htm

I've even made a small video of a walk around Dublin. It is amazing how many people don't know their own city. For me, it is something I am interested in.
