Could hooking the case wires up incorrectly cause a computer to crash or for components to over heat. Didn't think this was possible but just asking.

Like the front panel stuff? probably not, unless you're somehow shorting the USB headers or something, in which case, your computer should just turn off straight away as if you took the plug out. If you think overheating is the suspect, leave the case off and open a window, then see if it happens again.

Sometimes if the front panel connectors are not in the right places, the computer won't start at all so thats probably not the issue. Is your CPU or video card fan working correctly?

Well ya see I put this pc together for my sister, I ran and installed windows and it worked fine. Then the first time I got into wndows was in there for bout half an hour then it just shut down. So I justed turned it back on and it cut out straight away, so I took the case over off to see if anything was loose etc. and the video card was really hot. I changed the video card over to see if the card was at fualt but the same thing happened. Just was wondering bout the case wires as I guessed where to put them really!

the video card shouldnt get to hot esp if your not playing games or doing some 3d rendering.

It sounds like a overheating problem, Do you have case fans ? one in the front, blowing in air, and one in the back blowing air out ? If not you sould. One thing to check is the cpu heatsink, take it out, and re-seat it.

As far as connecting things wrongly, there is no possibility it can makes things overheat, As ruu said it is morelikely it just wont boot up.

Another thing to try is Leave the side panel open, and aim a desk fan inside it, If it dosent crash this time you know its a over heating problem.

Does it even power on a little bit now? Could it be a dodgy PSU perhaps?

Did you try and strip it down to the basics? RAM, Hard drive and video card?
