Eircom Dial Up - Please Help

I need help connecting a computer to Eircom dial up.
The problem is it just keeps giving the error - number busy.

It is a new computer, only two weeks old. It is the basic dell package, Windows XP, MacAfee security center, Windows firewall, and Intel modem.

I have plugged the line into my laptop and it connected first time, but nothing I try can get it to connect on this computer.

I have been on Eircom’s website, rang the premium line number (that’s a rip off and they know nothing), had my brother in law look at it (he’s a network engineer), and I’m a software developer and none of us can figure it out.

I have tried two different modems, one old and one new. That didn’t work.
The new modem has been reinstalled and seems to be working perfectly.
There is no problem with the cable or the connection setup.

My best guess is an abstract security setting, but I have tried disabling the firewall, the security center and setting the internet security level to low. Nothing worked.

Before anyone suggests it, it is for my uncle and broadband is not an option, so I am stuck trying to get dial up working.

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

    PLEASE HELP

Co to Show network connections. I bet u know where this is. :D
    Create a new connection
    Next
    connect to the internet
    next
    setup my connection manually
    next
    connect using dialup modem
    next
    Enter name
    next
    1892150150
    next
There is no need for username of passwords
    next
Tick the box if you want a shortcut on your desktop
    finish

This will work on 95% of computers first time

Let us know how you get on with this

    Regards
    Declan

So its dialing, just getting the number busy all the time? Creating a new dial up connection as shown above might do the trick. Also did you try any of the other 'free' providers?

thanks lads, but I've done all of this. I spent 15 minutes on the phone to eircom's tech support. they made me delete all my connection setups and start again with no luck.

I tried the dell internet connection, which uses a different connection number, but with the same result.

    Thanks anyway

When you dial the connection numbers from your phone
Do you get an engaged tone?

Try going into Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel and then Modem->Properties->Diagnostics->Query Modem (I think) and let us know if it responds ok or what message is there..

Sounds like a dodgy modem and/or driver, you could uninstall/reinstall the driver in Device Manager. You dont say whether you can get a tone or not, go into the Modem properties and turn up the volume so you can hear whats going on. Also the number busy might indicate a phone extension off the hook. Set all your modem settings back to default and try again.

    Other possible issues.

I've seen new PC modems set to US settings, which means that it has a difficult time dealing with UK/Irish dialtones.
Cables that go through BT to RJ11 phone connectors have caused issues with select laptops.

Are you using the phone lead that came with the modem?

    http://homepage.eircom.net/~leslie/testpage/wiring.htm
If you're using a store bought extension lead, sometimes you've to snip the outer pair within a 2 pair phone cable to prevent problems. Same for many printer/fax combinations.

Make sure your Uncle hasnt got call barring on his line, I.E local calls only or inbound calls only.....just a guess.

I would say its exactly what Ressem described. I have seen this loads of times but with modems in desktop pc's aswell. Just snip the 2 outer wires and you should be grand!!!

    :D

I think it is wat ressem says too. Its obviously not a line baring thing, as he can dial up using another modem in a different pc from the same line, Go with the drivers thing first of all. The manufactures site will have its latest drivers. Worth a go.

This mightn't apply to you, but its just an experience i went thru:

I was down at a neighbours house 2 try and set up their dial-up connected on the new pc they got in pcworld. Turned out they had no modem in their pc & had the cable connected to the gigabit NIC adapter (it fits, even clicks). Had spent 2 days trying to get a connection before they asked me.

I often had to use a splitter on the main phone socket in the wall to get mine working at once stage. Phone in one side of the splitter and line from PC modem to the other, it would not work otherwise, just something else to think about.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I do get dial tone, it calls the number and then it just comes back with number busy and an engaged tone.

I have run the diagnostics and everything is running fine.

The modem is set to Ireland so it’s not the area thing.

It might need updated drivers, even though it is saying its working fine. I am going to hook it up to my broadband tonight and update to the latest drivers.

Just in case, I have also ordered and external modem. A mate said he had the same problem a while back and just switched to an external and it connected fine.

I'll let you know how I get on,

    Thanks again
