First a quote from the article.
The games industry is like a "big village". The centre of the village is the most active and healthy part of the games industry and by staying there, it means you can no longer see the outside world. There you'll be pampered and be surrounded by enthusiasts. But a few years ago, I heard in society that Nintendo was losing its place from the centre... It gave us the chance to slip away and understand the game market more.

This article outlines the business strategy for the Nintendo Wii. It is an incredible read. It also explains the distruptive business strategy and how the Playstation took over Nintendo's crown and why NES was so popular, why the Playstation 3 is becoming so unpopular, why Xbox has failed to take Playstation crown, why Sega failed among other things.

    However it is fecking long!

Only read page 2 so far. A lot of things there I would agree. I would assume the whole article is a good read, cept its far too long

Really. I read the enite article and the auther backed up most of his asumptions with quotes from nintendo sources. he also referenced basic principles of marketting that have been used and indeed Sony and nintendo have aknowledged using them in the past.

All in all I thought it was very interesting and really does make for a great "next gen" v "new gen" debate

The point he made about the old joysticks and everyone giving out about the change to the d pad was interesting. Maybe history won't be repeated (it already was for the ds) but then again maybe it will. Sony thought it would.

There is a difference between assumption and prediction, point in example "current trends in consumer habits" is the greatest delusion ever concivied, hence all predictions he makes are speculation.

Predictions by their nature are speculation... based on current trends and relevant info.

Yeah but most are complete bollocks where as this is at least somewhat reasonable.

If nothing else it gives a good explanation of a disruptive business strategy.

Which is something I never knew anything about. It's pretty obvious though that it has been used before and is being used again. It's just a question of whether it will work or not.
