So without warning, my X850XT decides to die (no, it's not under warranty), with buzzing sounds, crazy glyphs on the monitor, interesting smells and smoke. If you'll look at my blurry grief-stricken picture, you'll see the three components in a row on the corner of the card: they seem to be the organ that failed. I turned on the system twice following the death of the card, just to be sure to be sure, and it was the topmost of these that was smoking. It looked like the kind of smoke you get when you solder, and smelled a bit like it too... also, it made this kind of loud bzzzz... noise (but no visible arc). then the current clearly went through the roof as the PSU automatically shut down (probably for the best). Needless to say, this component was extremely hot when I touched it afterwards. I'm at peace with the death of the card, but I'm wondering if any of you have any idea what happened to this component?
It sounds like a short or dry solder to me, but there's no evidence of either, and no moisture. Anyone know why this might have happened?
