The speedometer and mileometer on a friend's Peugeot 406 2.0 petrol have recently stopped working. I'm guessing it may be a faulty speed sensor. Does anyone have any ideas as to whether this is likely to be the problem, where I might get a new one cheaply, whether it's easy to fit, etc? Thanks.

It maybe a loose connection at the back. Might be worth taking it apart and having a look before buying a specific part.

He brought it to a mechanic yesterday who said it was definitely the speed sensor in the gearbox. Problem is, Peugeot want €300 for the part. GSF have one that sounds right for STG £45+VAT, but I have no way of knowing whether it's the correct part.
