Ghost Removable drives

Hoping someone can shed some light on this.
My brother got a Dell recently and for some reason when he boots up Windows shows 4 removable drives i.e, removable disk e:, removable disk f: etc. even though there are none connected. If he stops these devices using the Saely Remove Hardware icon they disappear. The question is why are they appearing in the first place? It also seems to be causing problems with his JVC camcorder as the PC doesn't detect it when plugged in. This may be another problem though as his mp3 player is picked up no bother.
