Can't get microphone to work

    I bought a headset mic to use with Skype earlier today. The microphone works fine on my PC, but when I plug it into my laptop it doesn't work. The sound from the PC comes through the headphones, but it doesn't work as a microphone. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? The mic level is turned up in the volume control. Thanks.

    What sort of sound card do you have on the laptop? Would the microphone jack be assignable? Ie, it could be the line in or microphone jack?

    Sigma Tel Audio soundcard. I'm not sure what you mean about the rest...there's only the 2 slots that the mic/headphones could possibly go into. I've gone into the control panel but can't find anything of use there
