Class Rep Nominations

    Hey all,

If any of you are interested in running to be a class rep, the deadline is Friday 13th (that's this Friday) at 5pm. Nomination forms are available in SU Front Office, on SU noticeboards in the Hamilton and Arts Block and from the Education Office on the first floor of House 6. The form download on TCDSU.org doesn't work, so if you're unable to come collect one, contact me at education@tcdsu.org (with 'Class Rep Form' as the subject) and I'll e-mail you one.

For those of you who don't know, a class rep-

-Is the link between the officers of the Students' Union and its members.

-Deals with issues on the ground, such as problems with lectures or problems with course work.

-Participates in council meetings and communicates the needs of their class to the relevant officers.

-Represents students on school committees, which deal with issues such as course changes, college policies and the day-to-day running of the school.

-Helps individual students, dealing with basic queries and referring students in difficulty to the Education Officer, Welfare Officer, or college services such as the Senior Tutor.

-Plans and organises socials and nights out for their class (with the help of the Ents Officer)!

From reading this board, I've seen a few criticisms of class reps and the structure in which they work. Those of you who feel that your rep hasn't been working as hard as possible should really consider running. If you have any questions about the role, send them to me at education@tcdsu.org.

I hope some of you reading this will decide to run.

Where do you submit the form to exactly?

I would assume one of two places - 1) there should be a collection slot on the education officers door on the second floor of house six and 2) there SHOULD (this is more my opinion) be one same floor on the poster board between the SU places and the bookshop. but that could end badly with people being assholes and taking them. who knows..

When are actual elections? Like when should I make the speech next week or this week? Like.

Why should anyone run for class rep? What does one get out of it?

The form should be dropped in to SU Front Office. That's the office across from the House 6 shop. There's a ballot box on the desk in there. Just put your form in. We would have liked to have more places but then supervision becomes an issue. That office closes at 5pm everyday but if you can't get it in before then, you could slip it under my door or e-mail it to me at education@tcdsu.org. Elections, where necessary, will take place next week, on Wednesday and Thursday. It would be preferable if you didn't make a speech this week as it could be construed as early campaigning...which is bold.

As regards what students get out of running. From my own perspective, I made loads of good friends from all over college, I've learned all kinds of things about people and college and I always enjoyed helping people so it gave me a chance to do that. Also, there'll be training events during the year which will hopefully enable you to enhance your skills in things like public speaking, negotiation and other fun things like that.

With this attitude I hope you don't run for election.

Just be glad you ended with that little emoticon thingy. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry...

Oh, I have no interest whatsoever. I do think its a fair question, though, and I note no-one has answered it. Many people I have spoken to seem to be of the opinion that the SU is pretty much powerless, meaning that its unlikely that people do it out of a sense of altruism. Now, I don't know if either of these assumptions are correct, but as an outsider looking in I can see an element of truth in both.

I was under the impression that elections and counts have taken place. I've looked on the SU website (www.tcdsu.org) under your union but for my course any many others there doesn't seem to be a hint at who won the contested positions. Is there a gross oversight on my behalf or is the website just slow to be updated?

Elections and counts have happened. As you say, the website hasn't been updated.

Really? About the elections? You sure? After the results were all sent out, I started focussing more on finishing off work on some student cases so if I was delayed in getting back, I'm sorry but I thought I'd replied to everyone. I have to prioritise students' issues over election stuff, especially now that the elections are over but I know it can be frustrating not to get a response. If I really still haven't gotten back to you, send me the e-mail again and I'll get back to you today. If I have gotten back to you, let me know so I know I haven't forgotten anyone.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure I emailed you. Can't check my outbox because my harddrive blue up. I got the answer on the website anyway. Don't worry about it.
