I've seen these all over the Glenageary/Sallynoggin/Deangsgrange area this weekend. Basically they're 2 black wires running across the road attatched to a box at one side. They're secured to the road. Anyone know what they are?

I think they're for counting traffic, but I'm not sure.

They're all over the Firhouse/Knocklyon/Rathfarnham areas aswell. They just popped up the past week or so.

    Traffic Counters

They record the traffic throughout the day to see what the peak hours are. Expect to see traffic lights or a roundabout wherever they are within the next few months.

There are two cables so that the counter can tell which direction the vehicles are travelling. They can also recognise different weights and lengths. The local authorities usually contract a private specialist company to carry out the count. The count may be necessary before approval is given to install traffic lights, pedestrian crossings etc.

Yep - traffic counters. Apparently a lot more efficient than a guy with a clipboard....................

This technology existed before I was born! It was cheap enough 20 years ago!

I drive through crap traffic everyday; because of the people who did not have any vision - whatsoever!
