Help! NTFS.sys corrupted

I recently tried installing Service Pack 2 but during the installation, the power was cut to my PC.

When I attempted to start it up afterwards, it told me that NTFS.sys was missing or corrupt.

I attempted to access the System Recovery tool using my Windows XP disc, but for some reason it won't accept my Admin password.

So I used Knoppix and loaded up my PC. Unfortunately, I don't have sufficien rights with Knoppix to simply overwrite the corrupt NTFS.sys file with the one from the disc.

    Help please!

    Adam

I think the only way I can think of is to do a repair install over your existing one. When you put in the XP CD.

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. (Not the Recovery Console)
Then choose the installation you want to repair and press R.

How far do you get into setup (do you get to copying files), does it freeze at the same point each time?

    use a different disc?

I've tried a few discs but it keeps happening. It loads up the setup and gets to the main screen ("Press R to access recover console, press enter to install Windows, Press F3 to exit") and then it just freezes so I can't access recovery console OR re-install Windows.
