Ffs, look at the price? you'd buy three of them for that money. It never ceases to amaze me the prices some Irish classic car dealers look for imported classics here, realistic prices are only a ferry trip away.

Makes this one look like a bargain then...

Has anyone seen one of these?

    Junkyard, i've never seen a 2 door 600, even in mags/books.
    Were they one-off special orders?

bloody hell those are on at serious money

you really would need to know what you ar buying, 40 year old air suspension systems and all....

I am very familiar with both those 600's for sale at the moment. The green one needs nothing, and the price is negotibale, and for a cash deal there would be quite a reduction !

The other one is not nearly as good. The problem you face with a 600, and its intense network of hydraulics, not to mention the crammed 6.3V8 is that if you need anything done the parts costs you an arm and both legs and then you not only have to actually find someone wiliing to work on them but you need to ensure they are experienced enough !

I know of two people on this Island who are competant enough and you'd need plenty of time to give them !

When new the factory would send a team of specialist engineers to wherever in the World to look after the cars !

As for the Coupe, the factory made one car and the 600 Guru in the USA,Karl Middelhauve, has made a Coupe (with different lines) a hearse, a pickup and also stuck a 6.3 into the W111 Coupe shell !

I saw a black one of those for sale on the German eBay about a month ago for half that price. It too was in immaculate condition.

Still though, I think the 450SEL 6.9 is a nicer looking car.

Yeah you can get them cheaper, but you'd have to spend seriousl money one them afterwards. these cars command high prices with the right history, without that they are simply a moneypit !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

Some of them maybe but some of the cars for sale advertised in Ireland are three and four times the price that was paid for them in other countries. I'm regularly at classic car auctions in the U.K. and have seen cars sold and have seen what was paid for them and then see the same cars for sale here at hugely inflated prices. I'm all for profit and can appreciate the expenses incurred by importing them but some prices are absolutely outrageous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yes I hear you, loud and clear !

I was merely pointing out that a €40,000 Merc 600 is not simply €40,000 away from an €80k one ( does that make sense ? )

In fact I recall recently a Ford Thunderbird, Ex "The Who" John Entwistle, being sold at auction for 27k sterling and two weeks later its on a UK lot at £47,000.

Needless to say its still on that lot !

Agreed, ever since the whole Damiler/Chyrsler merger thing in the late 90's, build quality has dropped considerably. I can see Mercedes going down the same road Rover did 30 years ago.

They're there already, personally I'd drive a Fiat before I'd drive a modern Mercedes...... overrated rubbish. At least with Fiat you know what your getting but Mercedes try and pass off a quality product and give you a crap car and s*ite service. Its a pity really considering they had it all on a plate one time and we all know they can build quality cars.

Fact is it will never return !

No car maker can provide the level of build quality that MB used to up to the mid 80's, there isn't an economy that would take the product at the price it would need to be !

Plus the company has changed from one that was ruled by exceptional engineers first, accountants second to one that is ruled by accountants first and foremost...............with whatever type of engineering thay can afford to produce a product that can be built to a certain price !

All manufacturers are the same nowdays the difference is that MB were once an exclusive product, so folk didn't mind paying for high quality, low depreciation and exclusivity !

Now they get a car with lots of toys and a prestige badge !

Things may improve, in fact they have in the last 18 months, but the service in Ireland and the UK is dismal to say the least ! I could tell you stories......but you've heard them all before !!

While it's impossible to dispute that the build quality went down the toilet in the nineties, and they lost all sense of style, personally I think the CLS is a return to form.

That being said, the new S Class is like a giant boy racer's car with those idiotic-looking arches...

Here are some interesting photos of a Mercedes 600 I came across, some people simply have no taste.:)

That first picture, who ever done that to the car should be hung by the balls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

I'd say the first one is a Pope-mobile or something and the rails and running boards are for security men to hang on to, the second one has to be a mock up, nobody could desecrate such a beautiful car could they?:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yeah the first one does have the running boards and hand rails for security gaurds but it doesn't look like the Pope's one !

That second one is obviously being ticketed by that woman for poor taste, its hideous !

I'd be very surprised if that was a Crayford conversion tbh, I thought they only did Cortinas, Mantas and run of the mill stuff like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

    Yes Crayford my a55 !!

Curiously on that link it asks for £220,000, and shows a link to more pictures where the same car has an asking price of € 660,000 !

It does look to be a faithful reproduction !

    ........what colour ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,376 ✭✭✭Squirrel

Navy or dark green, I'm semi colour blind so don't know for sure but it was one of them. I'll talk to one of the lads I was with and see if they remember the car I was constantly pointing out, just have to see if they were paying any attention. It was on 69 D plates

I've been to a few banger races (not in Ireland though). Most of the cars are shot, they really are. Granted, some cars could be saved but the interest to save them mustn't be there if they end up on the banger racing track.

As most people know I love classic hearses, I can appreciate they're not everyones cup of tea, but the banger racers have destroyed some beautiful ones over the years and I do think its a bit disrespectful to the dead. I have seen good money paid for some of them and the previous owners were assured they were going to a good home only to be wrecked the following week. I've seen some lovely cars go that way too, its a shame really.:(
