Hi just wondering has anyone here been to Mexico, i mean like the real Mexico and not a 1 mile enclosure type package tour type deal?

Reason i'm asking is my girlfriend is mad to see everything there about Frida Kahlo and am wondering is it dodge-central like 2 milk bottle paddy-gringos walking around n' all?

    cheers

I was In Mexico DF for a few days. It's fine during the day and there are quite a few American tourists around so you wouldn't stand out that much while going around to see the sights there. At night though the atmosphere really changes. I was staying very central near the Zocalo and all the shutters come down on the streets, and almost nothing remains open. Locals were telling us to be very careful taking taxis as they have been known to violently rob people at times (hotels always take the registration of taxis when they arrive to try an prevent this).
I'm sure there are better areas in Mexico City though. Sure the city centre in Dublin can be sketchy enough at night. If you do go and take all the usual precautions (no obvious wallets, visible cameras, watch your pockets and surroundings etc.), I'm sure you'll be grand. Just don't go out on the slosh late and night around the city centre and jump into a taxi off the side of the street!
Maybe split your time between Mexico City and another destination on the coast so that you get to see more than one side of the country. It's actually an enormous country and has loads to offer. It's cities weren't one of the highlights for me but each to their own.
