    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the girlfriend a digital camera for Christmas. I've looked at a few and based on advice, specs and so on I think I've pretty much settled on the Canon IXUS range.

Only thing is I can't decide between 750, 800, 850 and 900 models. Money isn't especially an issue - but I know that the highest model number does not automatically mean the best product so I'm hoping you nice people will be willing to impart some advice.

I'm not tied to the IXUS so I'm open to persuassion. Also, having seen the canon thread - where is the best/cheapest place to buy online

    Thanks

I've looked at cameras in this market segment recently (to recommend to my girlfriend to buy for her Dad and for her brother to buy for his girlfriend). I'd go with either the Canon IXUS 65 (slightly smaller - 6MP) or the IXUS 800IS which includes lens-based anti-shake system (better than the DSP software based system in most of the cameras. The 850IS and 900Ti probably aren't available yet, but the 850IS would probably be a little better than the 800IS if you can find/afford it.

Both actually went with my other choice - the Casio Exilim range, and after seeing the pictures on the screen, I think they may have been right. There are a few models that are very similar - Casio EX-S600 / EX-Z60 (slightly cheaper) / EX-S770 (newest and slimmest with a higher res screen screen). All have basically the same lens and similar picture quality

My recent experience and liking for the Casio range aside, you can't go wrong with one of the Canon models. I'm probably going to upgrade my Dad's IXUS 400 for him eventually and it'll be to the IS-enabled replacement in the range.

One other thing - don't be tempted by a camera this size that offers 10 megapixels. The lenses and sensors are so small on these cameras that you're only wasting your money and you'll be using up storage space on your memory card and your hard disk and only forcing yourself to want to upgrade your PC sooner. 5/6/7 is plenty unless you plan to print huge poster size, and even then the benefit is marginal.

As for online shops - try pixmania, technikdirekt, komplett, ...
And go for a 1Gb card, just don't buy it in a bricks'n'mortar shop.
