My work blocked gmail but Iwas able to get around it. Try this: log into www.google.com/ig - its a personalised homepage, get it to display your google mail, and when you click on your email it uses a different way around, and always got me in, despite gmail.com being blocked.

Otherwise install www.logmein.com on your home pc and chec your mail remotely.

It seems to block that too

    hey,
if google mail is blocked then www.unblockthis.com will almost certainly be blocked also, i have a small application to get around the net security if you want, simply turn it on when you need it, untracable by your network admin

Yes they should if they are actively looking at the logs, and if they catch you, you are in a word screwed.

Think about what you are doing. You have actively gone out and sought out a way to bypass your companies security / Internet / email policy.

While you maybe just checking your mail, you could also be emailing company secrets to competitors, Viewing P*** , anything really!

Is your gmail worth getting Fired over. If your IT department finds out, they will/should do everything in their Power to make an example of you.

Have you tried actully asking them? Probably not.

Just ask IT to unblock it. Tell them you need it for work purposes. Make up some bull like you need to send EXE files to customers and the work email blocks them or something like that. Usually web sites are blocked automatically by the web marshall software. Chances are someone got a naughty email in their gmail inbox and this caused it to be blocked.

Access: Free automatic forwarding and POP3 access

    http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about.html

    DING!

Use a client like Mozilla thinderbird or outlook exress to get your mail.
Bet they blocked web access to Gmail but forgot to block SMTP traffic.

Give it a go and let us know.

just to be devil's advocate for a moment....

Is it worth risking your job to have access to your personal email at work? Some companies are getting very strict with people deliberately circumventing their security procedures.

Right...lets get back to the business in hand :D

I don't think they'd be stupid enough to fall for that.
Where I work all webmail is blocked. You can use the company email for legitimate business purposes only. Inbound messages containing any non-Office attachments are quarantined and you must ask for them to be released, and give a good reason why they should be.

then take a hint, it's blocked for a reason. productivity loss coz some dumb ass spent the day on personal email or the fact that attachments are not scanned for virus etc. ya can pick you gmail up from a wap enabled cell phone. browse to m.gmail.com and sign in that way if you really need to use it.

I know if you where on my LAN and tried get around the security for personal email i'd throw the book at you. companies always have email and internet policy not because they want to be hard asses about it and ruin your life by not letting you at it, but because these resources belong to the company and it cost money to run them. so next time you get a bad pay review maybe its coz some idiot spent all day on Bebo or there was down time due to a virus or spyware and that means the money you should have gotten in a pay rise has no gone into upgrading the security and installing applications lime Mime Sweeper, mail marshall, Websense and so on. :D

Your employer pays you to do a job. He does not have to provide you with web access for personal use.

    Get over it!

Jaysus, sounds like an awful place to work. Do you have to ask for permission to take a piss as well?

actally you'll find more and more companies are restricting usage, myself i have left most free email open, with the exception of hotmail and yahoo. but i do monitor what sites people visit. i just tend to look at the logs if i see anything dodgy i look at it decide to block or not and make not for myself at home ;)

you'll also find that more companies are restricting internet usage either to out of hours or by group membership where by if you have no business need for it then you don't get it. and the reason behind it is they are covering their asses from litigation. it was documented in the US that in one company some people got some JPGs emailed in that contained nudity, a female member of staff witnnessed this and sued the company for sexual harrasement as she should not have to endure that in the work place. granted a little extreme in my view but maybe she felty the HR or IT department didn't take her complaint seriously enough. said company lost thousands in compo and i'm sure there have been other cases. or cases where by your system becomes infected with a virus and propogated outside your network. the second company comes back at you because you are technally responsible for spreading a virus coz some numb nuts wanted to read his hotmail or something. the list of reasons behind blocking it are endless. mostly though it boilds down to productivit loss. that hour a day you are on your mail is an hours less work they get out of you and you are paid to work after all. well some of us are :D from an employment point of view internet access like spyandex is a privlege and not a right. abuse it and it will be taken away.

I have worked for one employer where anything goes and the trouble they have with spyware, porn and everything else was unreal. another has zero access. your email was only internal no external mail unless you had a business need. and another where content filtering was in place (mime sweeper with websense) and if it was blocked you had to contact the IT manager to request it be released or access granted and heaven forbidyou if you requested a personal mail of dodgy site to be accessed.
