The GUI national academy at Carton House has a special offer on at the moment.

A large basket of balls (130 pinnacle) to hit on the range costs just 5 euro every weekday from 10am-12noon.

Also the short game area is brilliant btw.

Is the short game area open to anyone to go along and use, or can it only be used as part of a lesson? Couldn't find anything on the site.

I was hoping to go along tomorrow and sort out my short game.

Hey graeme i would go before 12 so it wont be packed. Bit of advice for you just a tip if you have a camcorder at home bring it with you.
Set your ball up say 6 foot from the hole and sit the camcorder on the ground facing the ball and hit record then open the side screen and have alook it seriously works for me. Make sure you get both front and side angle. Also place the camera behind the hole and you will see both the spin on the ball and if your putter is facing the hole after you hit the ball.

    Give it a go

Cheers golf ninja, i hadn't thought of recording it. Might give that a go today.

I'm fairly confident that the face of my putter is straight at impact. My biggest problem is that when i'm say 20 - 30 feet away... i have the tendency to leave at least one out of every three either miles short or too far past the hole.

I think i'm perhaps worrying about the weight too much and not trusting my stoke enough.

My problems seem to be in the head with regards to putting!

Sounds like the pace of your stroke is wrong.
Seems like you might be hitting at the ball instead of stroking it. Remember the longer the putt the longer the stroke not the harder you hit it.
My father played off 3 for 25 years and it was the first thing he thaught me.

    good luck with it today

Got on ok, but think i still have a fair bit of work to do.

Went out for 12 holes on my way home. Didn't miss a single green and I was 3 under par. Same old troubles though... two three putts and a handful missed from 6-10 feet. I know i can't hole them all, but i need to get working on it!

was there any signs up about different types of membership/special offers up there?

cos as we've said the website wont be winning awards anytime soon for being up to date.im 99% certain the november it refers to saying when membership will be available was last november

I didn't actually notice seanie i'm afraid. The guy behind the desk was too busy laughing at me as the last day i was up i locked myself out my car up there and had a nightmare time trying to get sometime to come out to help me as my mobile was locked in the car!

I'll most likely be back up soon though so i'll be sure to have a look and let you know.

I got a membership from July till next December for e150. Was on the waiting list for a couple of months though.

Great place & the short game area and putting green have improved me a lot. Like hitting balls off the grass instead of mats on the range too.

The place is first class! Does the E150 allow you to use everything for free and get you free buckets of balls?

Hey Seanie his name is Barry Power i found him very good the DVD that he gave me had my golf swing on it compared me to tiger and more importantly he was explaining something to me during the lesson asked me if i understood and i said yes when i really i did not but last night i was able to put on the DVD and listen to what he said. If you have a look at his website http://www.bpga.ie
it really is top class. I am due back to see him in 2 weeks. He wont give you a normal lesson each lesson comes with dvd or usb key. Seems to be state of the art.
Would reccommend him to you all guys.

I just rang him up and he booked me in i had to wait about 4 days to get a spot.

He has a private enclosed space with all the gear in the corner couple of screens and the camera is very good. I got a couple of lessons before from pro's with camera's and i could not really see the shaft or club head positions throughout the swing but the camera he put me on looks like what you see tv crews with and i could see the shaft and club head positions even at the point of contact. The thing i liked about it was the dvd being able to bring it home. I thaught he was going to be very technical but he surprized me with how simple he kept the swing.
My next lesson is next wednesday week.

Does anyone know what they're building on the opposite side of the main entrance road to the driving range? i.e as you drive into carton house, what are they putting in on the right?

They seems to have levelled a lot of the land off and drainage looks to have been put in.

Training pitches if rumours are to be believed.
