    Hi there,
I'm going to be leaving Ireland soon to go travelling. Probably in less than 2 months I'll be heading off.

I am interested in getting some self defence lessons before I go, cuz you never know what I'll run into on my travels:rolleyes:

I am fully aware that 2 months is nowhere near enough time to get to grips with a martial art in any practical sense, so I guess what I am seeking is some basic skills that the instructor would think most suitable considering the time restrictions.

I have done martial arts before but never got past green belt:o

    Regards
    Cian

what martial art did you do before?
this might influence your choice as you will be familiar with it
green belt level is usually around intermediate level so you have a start
otherwise maybe a Krav Maga course might be more beneficial.

    Ninjitsu

Unfortunately I didnt remain in the class long enough to get into the flow of it even though I thought it was brilliant.

I was thinkin that because I only have a few weeks, finding someone who would be willing to give me 1 on 1 lessons may be the best thing to do as opposed to dipping my toe into a weekly class?

Hey Cian. Where abouts are you based? I would actually advise against doing any short "intense" courses. What I believe would be a good idea is to find a Martial Arts club near you and train with them for the time you have left in Ireland. Ideally, if theres an MMA gym nearby you could get some practical experience before you head off. Most MMA gyms train a few times a week.

    Good Luck,

    Dave.

    Hi Dave
I'll be based in Bray but I can drive anywhere around the south side really. Why would you advise against a few weeks of personal training?

    Cheers

maybe train with with these guys? :D

you're not going to learn anything which would help you in a 'physical' responce to a violent confrontation in such a short space of time, anybody telling you that you can is lying/misinformed

so let me some up an expensive weekend/crash course for you to save you time and money...

    ..get ready for it...

    dont be stupid :)

lol seriously though just use common sense and enjoy your travels!

Well I suppose it all depends on whos giving the 1 on 1 session. I still think going to an MMA gym would be best. As John said, theres not much you can learn in such a short space of time. So taking this into consideration, if youre dead set on training, the best thing you can do, in my opinion, is to get as much sparring and physical contact in as possible. If you dont mind jumping on the Dart, I train in MMA down in East Wall, we meet at Connolly Station at 6.30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Were a small club with a max of about 10 people each class. Check here for more details - www.mmaireland.com
Alternatively, if you dont want to travel that far you could try the Next Generation Gym in Loughlinstown (dont have a website for them) or www.fiannagym.com in Balally, just 2 seconds walk from the Balally Luas stop.

    Good Luck,

    Dave.

great video John still laughing- what about the guy who put the ball on the dummys head- slassic
so you do disagree with weekend courses?
I am really questioning my Krav maga course next week now

Yeah KM is no supposed to be taught over weekends, it takes years of proper training just like MMA to learn KM. (though I am sure someone will be laughing all the way to the bank on Monday morning.)

LOL At Video....that just about sums up what your weekend course well be like! And I am Serious! plus loads of BS stories about soldiers in WWII and crap like that.

If you want a good awarness is seld defence buy "Watch My Back " By Geoff Thompson..amy good book store or www.geoffthompson.com
that book will teach you more about self defence and what to avoid!

If you spent a few months learning to boxing, and worked hard at it, you'd have something simple , basic, and properly trained, and maybe some sparring time (essential).

Cianos you'd be much better prepared for travel to exotic locations if you take a private course with me on how to spot dangerous wild animals and how to treat stings/bites etc. Pm me for details and I'll give you a special boards.ie reduction :)

In truth, i think 2months of solid mma training will make you better prepared from preventing yourself from getting the **** kicked out of you if you start a fight somewhere. However, a better idea would be to avoid starting fights and presume no one is going to attack you randomly.

Perhaps I should have added the we usually give newbies a free month of training :D

I'm going to wager that when you encounter any trouble on your travels, it will either be when you're inebriated, or when you've wandered into the wrong part of town. So learn how to drunkenly buy someone a peace offering drink, and always get a map!

Seriously, if you were training 5 nights a wekk in something you might pick up enough skill in 2 months, but otherwise, I'd save your money for the trip.

    Best of luck with it!!!

Do 2 months muay thai 5 nights a week, Muay Thai is probably one of the best. and you will be a bit handy.

well i don't 'disagree' with them - if your asking me do i think you'll learn anything applicable to real life scenario in a weekend course then my answer is not likely

think about it. you do a weekend course and then lets say 7-10yrs later you find yourself in a 'situation', do you really think any of it will come back to you?

listen to Millionaire's advice - boxing or thai boxing is the way to go....as long as you enjoy the training!!:D

Definately, definately find an mma gym - ever see UFC? You'll learn the stuff they use there. Obviously 2 months isnt long enough but youll be a bit safer if you have to defend yourself if you know a bit of muay thai and some jiu jitsu.

    Cian
Learn as much as possible about the countries that you intend to visit.
Be carefull of any discussions involving political or religious topics.
Always be polite and don't criticise the local Gov / police / military etc.
Make sure you have the contact number of th enearest Irish embassy

I have trained in various martial arts since 1977 IMHO you will not learn enough in 2 months training to be usefull on your travels. If the SH*T hits the fan you will be in a strange country, with different language, different laws and different perspective of self defence / fighting. and nowhere to run to.

I completely agree with Millionaire, Krav is a very good system if trained properly ie regular hard training and sparring

    Enjoy your travels

Thanks for the replies everyone very much appreciated. As I said in my original post I'm quite aware that very little can be learned about defensive techniques in the short space of time I have.

At the same time though my attitude is that something is better than nothing. And I think even the physical experience of it would be quite beneficial as I am a complete stranger to serious confrontation.

As an aside I'm actually quite good at spotting trouble from afar (maybe thats why Ive never been in a proper fight!), and I never drink so much that I am not in control, and I dont do drugs. A dry 'ol sh!te so:D

and buy that blood book by Geoff Thompson "Watch by Back"...it will give you great in sight into violence, and if your read carefully you will learn not to avoid, and deal with it!

sometmes all you need is a good hard right cross and left hook!

I that case something like boxing/thai boxing/judo/bjj could be good as the way you learn is by sparring against resisting opponents, thus resemble fighting.

However as you dont drink or do drugs you should have you wits about you and be able to avoid a high percentage of bad situations. So id say relax and dont worry about learning anything in a few weeks just enjoy the holiday like the others said, being polite will get you a long way.

As a student who has done a fair bit of travelling over the past 2 years, and was ossified for most of it, I'd say Ropers advice was the best.

Learn to talk out of anything, AND ALWAYS bring a map.

I ended up in the wrong part of Nice once, and had to pay to get out of a basement... ...

Don't trust anyone who knows where theres an 'underground' club.

I got in load of trouble and scraps all over the world, I never started any, but had a great knack of getting into fights, and it was ALL Drink related, bar 2 incidents. and invloved plenty of "underground" late night drinking crap holes.

Now today I do not drink at all, and therefore, my chances of trouble are minimal. and I stay away from dangerous late night drinking holes, and if i see someone acting up in a bar, a get up and leave fast. makes a much better life!

I am in Singapore this past few days on business, and sober, and i have not seen even an aggressive look from someone. then again in Singapore if you do anti-social behavious, drinking, slashing on the street, puking like we do in ireland all weekend....you get the cat of 9 tails, whipping!

I have never been to such a civilized and modern place in my life as Singapore, but its bloody expensie compared to Thailand!!!!
