Which salary deduction?

    Question for Poll:
Mr. A commences in a new job on Monday 4th September. Let's just pick a round number - €4200 gross per month (need it divisible by three). Pay period is from the 1st to the last day of the month. So how much should he lose for missing Friday 1st?

This is based on a real-life situation of a friend of mine. Any comments or explanations welcome. Obviously the employer took Option 1 but I'd have thought that Option 2 would be the correct one.

What should the deduction be? 11 votes

30 day month = €140 per day. 3 days missed (Fri, Sat, Sun) = €420 deduction from salary.

21 working days in the month = €200 per day. 1 working day missed = €200 deduction from salary.

25 days excluding Sundays only = €168 per day. 2 days missed = €336 deduction from salary.

Assuming that he/she is working a 5-day week - Monday to Friday then Option 2 is the correct deduction.

She is. A friend has made the very valid observation that monthly is not the way to go anyway. It's an average derived from the annual salary. So using the same salary it should be:

    4200*12/52/5 = €194 deduction.

Otherwise there'd be different amounts deducted for February, September and July.

true it is derived from an annual calculation. i know that the civil service and a number of the financial institutes do their calculation based on a salary for a 7 day week even though only 5 of these are working days ie monday - friday

Assuming the employer went for Option 1. Wouldn't she have had Saturday and Sunday off anyway, which would mean she should only be deducted €140?

Edit: Sorry, misread the post, I notice the starting date in her contract is the 4th.
