Hi all, I dont know much about classic cars, so I need your advice. On a recent holiday to Malta I came across a 1969 Ford Capri for sale. I am interested in it but I don't know how much its worth in Ireland or if its worth importing?
The body work is in mint condition, with no rust, it has 90k miles 1.6 GT engine all original. below is a pic of the car (sorry for the pic quality):

If there is no rust and it is in perfect running order depending on the asking price it may well be worth importing.

All depends on how much you want it!

He is asking for €6000. Is this reasonable? and does anyone know how to import this and how much it may cost me?

add on all your import costs, flights, ferries, fuel, more ferries, more fuel, more ferries, hotels... you are looking at 7500 easily!

I think thats mad money for a capri but if you like a certain car then money isn't the main factor

I just got a quote back from a transport company in Malta. A 13ft container is €600 direct to Cork .

So this will leave the cost at €6600. I'm sure he will on budge on the price of the car so am looking realistically at €6000 deliverd.Unless there are any hidden costs I am aware of ?

Will I ever see this price back if I go to sell the car in Ireland ?

LHD or RHD. If is LHD i dought it's worth that. Only my opinion, i'm no expert. I've seen a very good condtion Mk1 facelifts go for 7k.

I could be wrong but isn't there some problem exporting classic cars from Malta? I think there is a preservation order on old cars and its almost impossible to take them out of the country.

well the first problem is whether Malta is EU yet... I dont think so

In which case you'll get hit for VAT on the Clost and the total shipping including the insurance... which if you add to teh 7500 estimate wil leave the car costing you 9K... surely a bit steep.

spot on Junkie...you cant bring them out (legally).....I guess you could get a Malta citizen to drive them on to the ferry to italy though.....:)

I'd suggest you browse elsewhere before getting too smitten with that particular car and get hung up on import costs. I don't know what a MK I Capri is worth, but you'll surely find a few for sale if you buy a couple of classic mags.

You can be sure that doesn't include port charges at one or both ends of the trip. You'd be amazed at what's not included in an inital transport quote. Factor in another couple of hundred for these unfortunately.

Personal I think that’s over the odds for a 1600GT.... there are a large number of Capri’s for sale in this country and up north for a lot less. If you are interested in a rare Capri I could be persuaded to sell mine.. If you just want a Capri give the guys in the club a call they’ll set you straight on the correct price.. There number is on this URL http://www.nevcc.net/Club_list.html.
Hope you get what you’re looking for; FOMOCO is the only way to go.:D
