Now that smart are gone/messing im thinking about moving to voip.
I have an eircom 2 mbps connection with a netopia wireless modem/router.

I would like to get voip completly independent of the pc. So im just making sure that all I need is to purchase an ip phone (any recomendations) and get a provider.
Which providers allow me to make calls without using a pc? Who would you recomend. Im looking to be able to keep my landline.

I will be making plenty of calls to mobiles and landlines so who would you recomend.

Do the providers suffer from much downtime?

You could check out freespeech.ie or blueface.ie who are 2 voip providers in Ireland. They can also supply you the hardware that you need pre-configured to use their services. As regards rates, you should also look at their sites, both or them publish their rates so it would pick a provider that offers you the best value.

I'm with Blueface and by and large find the service fine. They did have hardware problems recently but most of these problems seem to be resolved. Still though, you will need to bear in mind, it's an evolving technology so you may have some technical problems from time to time.

There's also a good FAQ in this forum to give you additional advice.

    HTH,
    A.
