Me being on my 4th Xbox 360 I have absolutly lost all faith in Microsoft. My last one was acting funny so it was sent back. The one before that crashed and turned itself on when it felt like it. Others just crashed intermittantly etc...

Now the latest one (4th) has developed a HAL-9000 like ability and starts up on its on when it feels like it. It even told me this evening that i can't leave the house and I should sit back down and play with it. (last bit made up ;) )

Has anyone else heard of this happening ? I've goolgled it and came up with nothing.

I'm currently pushing MS for a new one and should hear back by thursday , what do you reacon my chances are ?

I'd assume its something wireless trigering it to think someone has pressed the guide button on the controller. What do you have running around it?

I thought that myself, but no, nothing is triggering it. It doesn't seem to have any sort of pattern to it. When it does come on none of the controller segments are lit and nobody has touched the remote control.

The odd time I have actually come home and found it on, so no one was in the house. At first I thought one of the neighbours had an Xbox 360 , then I realised that the machine can only be turned on with a "paired" device.

The fact its the second one you've got and its not a common problem would suggest its somthing specific to you.

House built on an old Indian graveyard by any chance?

a "paired" device only works with bluetooth..the xbox controllers are wireless (2.5GHz freqeuncy) which is why any xbox 360 controller you buy in the shop works with your xbox without pairing..best thing is to remove all the batteries from all your xbox controllers, by any chance do you have the dvd remote for it? it's possible that someone controlling tv or something could be inadvertently switching it on..barring that it's like that interference from a tv remote or wireless router could be interfering with it.

Don't settle for a new 360, complain like ****, they should compensate you if you do with some accessories.

Yeah but when u first get them u have to press the little button on the xbox and then on the controller to get them working together!

Nope, if you hold the guide button when the machine is off, it will turn the machine on and auto sync the controller to the machine

With a controller that hasn't been connected yet?! I don't think so?! Why would they have the buttons to connect on the controllers if it did it anyway?!

To sync up more than one? If you just hold down the guide button with the console off it will turn the nearest 360 on

MY 360 Powered up when using Media Center Remotes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭KTRIC

In the case I was talking about in my original post no-one was near the remote / controller's at all. In one instance I had just arrived home and nothing was on in the house apart from the Xbox 360 !!!

I have actually seen it powering up on its own aswell, when I know for a fact no-one was interfering with it with any controller.

Its also plugged into a surge protector with 2 other low power devices which have not exibited any similar issues.

So what you're telling me is that all the Xbox360's will turn on when people are in work and pool their computing power together and take over the world ?

I think you've completly lost it Vasch !!!, MS taking over the world !!!, what a proposterous claim

Is there anything at all in the room that could be giviing an infra red signal to the 360.

From the sounds of it, it is probaby not being powered on by a wireless signal although do any of your neghbours have a 360?

Infra-red on the other hand is light that we cannot see, is it near a window, or any sort of device that could give an infra red signal, bear in mind the signal or pulse would have to be the exact one to power on the 360.

I had a look at this Wiki page about infrared, cool they use a picture of an Xbox 360 media remote to show the infrared being emitted from the remote.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infra_red

Not exactly related but one day I noticed that my 360 kept losing its wireless connection, it has the wireless adaptor, and my laptop download speeds where fluctuating wildy. I could not figure out what was going on till a I did a search for wireless networks in my area and one of my neighbours had a new wireless access point set up transmitting on exactly the same channel as mine.

I changed my channel and everything was ok. What surprised me is the range on wireless I live in a Semi-detached house with good space between the other houses and when I do a wireless search I can see at least 5-6 networks with good signal strenght.

There are other devices in the room like DVD recorder, tv , digibox etc. But it doesn't explain the machine being on when I got home. No-one would have been in the house to accidently hit the remote. It happened yesterday when the blinds and curtains were pulled in the room and no-one was using an infrared device in the room at the time.
