I want to put some DVD's onto my pc so I can then transfer them onto my Zen Vision M. Could anyone point me in the direction of a free DVD ripper please so I can do it. I don't want Trial version either as it can't copy most cd's as they're protected.

    Thanks,

    Timans

There are two programs I use, Clone DVD and AnyDVD. Any dvd removes the copyright protection from the dvd while clone dvd will rip the dvd.

    It's not free, is it?

    How? Is this illegal?

I'm looking for freeware. e.g. Firefox, iTunes etc etc.

the software isn't illegal, just the act of ripping the dvd....
    Dvd Shrink is free.

DVD Shrink is freeware. Its in the essential software thread at the top of this forum.
Its illegal to back up copyrighted material (ie dvd's) to your pc. I don't know what you want to back up ;)

Says this on the DVD Shrink website:
DVD Shrink is free software. You should never pay for DVD Shrink.

Its definitely freeware. They expect you to make a donation, but your under no obligation. Pm your email & i'll send it.

Ripping for your own use is surely ok? Everyone should be allowed to backup their DVD's, just like you do with your music by ripping it.

It's technically illegal, but it is deemed "fair use" so you won't have Gardaí beating your door down. However, the thread will quite likely be locked as this is answered in a sticky.

 No, it is illegal, but hard to enforce.

It's all a bit of a grey area, very grey in fact. Irish copyright law does allow for personal copies (within reason) for security/backup purposes, in case the original is damaged or lost. Most DVDs and CDs will contain a text blurb saying that any re-production without express consent from the copyright owner is prohibited.

The MPAA claim that any software that allows you to defeat/bypass copyright controls are illegal, and can prosecute you for using them. This is in the USA of course.

    I didn't realise.

    Sorry.

Just had a look at the Copyright and Related Rights Act, 2000 and it doesn't seem to have anything on video recordings. It mentions quite a bit about sound recordings, but not video. It does say you can backup computer software.

No mention of digital rights management or circumventing same. Unless it's covered in another statute then it's hard to see how backing up a DVD could be considered illegal.

The EUCD would cover it, but I don't think this has been fully adopted in Ireland yet. Backups do still seem to be legally permitted in Ireland.

DVD backup of discs you own is considered fair enough by the mods. It is a grey area, but tbh, I can't see a judge in the country actually getting uppity with you for making sure kids don't destroy your dvd's (for example). With one child, and a 2nd on the way, backup of expensive dvd's in the Khannie household is a common occurance. :)

There's an item in the FAQ about this anyway.
