    hi jacky
lubeck is about 1,5 hours away from hamburg but i think ryanair offers a shuttle bus to hamburg itself (lubeck to hamburg is what navan is to dublin).
going out in hamburg is fab and the best area would be the "Reeperbahn" which is full of pubs, clubs, lap dancing clubs for both guys and girls, fantastic nightlife till the early morning really. nice pubs/bars are the mandarin bar, molly malones and thomas reads. the docks, the kaiserkeller and cult are the coolest clubs and the cult used to be one of my favourites.
shopping is best be done in the area "moenkeberg-strasse", the locals will tell you were to go. have fun!!
oh, when leaving the clubs around 6ish in the morning on a sunday morning you should had to the fishmarket which is full of people who just left the clubs or just got up to see the fish mongers screaming and selling their goods....
get a fischbroetchen... hmm... yummy ;)

Make sure you take a look at the U-Boat museum. The basically turned an old decommishioned Russian Sub into a museum. You go on board and poke around it yourself, well worth seeing how cramped and claustraphobic they were. There is a tour guide as well that you can get, but unfortunatley it's only in German, atleast it was when I was there.

I'm heading here in 2 weeks myself, with the girlfriend, so if you have any more advice it would be much appreciated.

Hamburg is a great spot for the nightlife, Reeperbahn or the Keats as the locals call it is main going out spot as was mentioned above. Other good areas for heading out are Schanze. Schanze is a nice alternative area with great shops and some nice bars, nowhere near as crazy as the Reeperbahn. The Reeperbahn is where the red light area is, you'll see alot of the girls in their puffy jackets and bun bags hanging out beside Burger King in the evenings - across from the famous police station (Davidswache). They probably won't go near you if you have your girlfriend with you. If you go up that street by Burger King you'll see a street closed off, this is a men only street and is where the girls are in the windows, worth a look but don't bring your girlfriend, they don't take kindly to it.

City center, paricularly Monkebergstrasse is the place for shopping plus a large shopping center is after opening, can be accessed from Monkerbergstrasse or Jungfernsteig. If you are shoppping for something a little more unique without a major label then check out Schanze. Some really nice shops, I much prefer it here. If you have money to burn then cross the bridge beside the Rathaus and I can't remember if it's the first left or second. The designer stores are on one of those streets.

As for sightseeing, the harbour is a nice area, you can get a boat trip through the canals of Hamburg. Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined! Some sights worth checking out are the Michel church, Speicherstadt and the Rathaus. Also woth doing is taking the bus tour, they leave from the harbour. Yellow and Green bus is good. You buy a ticket and can hop on and off at the differnet places!

Oh and the local beer of choice is Astra - nice beer. And also, shops close on Sundays so it's a good day to do some of the sightseeing and Saturday can be fairly crazy in the city center for shopping!
