5.1 on a Laptop

    Have 5.1 Speakers but am selling my desktop so need to make them work with my laptop which has Firewire/USB2.0/PCMCIA.

    What are my options for the cheapest 5.1 solution. I'm investing in a decent outboard sound interface in a month or two, I just want a stopgap measure so I can use my speakers - i.e. that Audigy PCMCIA card on Komplett is complete overkill.

    No one? I've found about 10 types of PCMCIA "DJ" output cards, but nothing so basic as a 5.1 external dongle/PCMCIA card... It's really annoying me

    Not PCMCIA but there is a TerraTec Aureon external unit with a USB connection.

    5.1 support
    SPDIF support {optical}
    price €49

    Nice one, I'm going to wager that the input is a little less noisy than the built in one on my laptop as well :) Cheers 8t8!
