So if you think that you're going to pop down to your local store and play the Wii on a big kiosk when it comes out on November 19, think again. According to The Dallas Morning News, the only retailer to have authorized playable Wii kiosks will be GameStop, much to Wal-Mart and surely every other big box retailer's chagrin. That said, as our brethren at Joystiq point out, many shops may open up their own Wiis and set up a playable demo unit or three, but official blessed-by-Nintendo kiosks apparently won't be widespread for some time.

Hopefully it wont be the same over here, don't like Gamestop and certainly don't feel like waiting in line in there to play Wii.

I'd say if anything it would be Game that'd get the exclusive deal, but it's pretty uncommon, if not unheard of in Ireland (not sure what the US is like for it).
It may happen that one chain will get priority over another, I think that has happened before due to logistical failings, as in Smyths get a console pod in before Game, because Game are waiting for theirs from the UK and Smyths got theirs directly from Sony Ireland etc.

Just read that apperently Wal-Mart have said they wont have Wii Pods because they see them as a safety issue (with people swinging the remotes around and whatnot).

I don't know if what goes for Gamestop US goes for Gamestop in Ireland, but if so I find it a touch ironic when Gamestop here were the first ones to ditch the Gamecube entirely.

Gamestop US and Europe don't operate exactly the same. Same policies but it's sorta different. And they do do GameCube stuff to this day so I'm a bit confused as to you saying they ditched them?

I have never played a console in a games shop.

Has anyone else needed to when buying one?

Well at least two I know of stopped stocking GC games, even 2nd hand ones, well over a year ago, before even RE4 was out. A third one I know only had a few 2nd hand ones when I went several months ago, but I don't go there regularly so I don't know if they still sell any, or how long ago they stopped selling new ones. I assumed it was a company policy, perhaps it's just a local thing.

Pretty sure it was compnay policy, every Gamestop I went into over those months (Sept '05-May '06, I was in Carlow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Waterford etc.) cleared the shelves of Nintendo products when the PSP hit the scene and only recently restarted stocking (and placing nearer the front of the shop) Nintendo goods.

Why can't shops put up their own kiosks? Who cares if it's official or not?

The two in Dublin centre still do them? I think it's only the Dublin ones that do. A friend bought a Gamecube a week ago.

If ya need a lot of space to play then i doubt that the Gamestop in Bray will have the kiosk.. but there might be some space, eh - nah!! And the Gamestop in Dublin, from what i remember is spacious but will they implement it??

Is it true that Gamestop abandoned selling GC, thats crazy.. and a little disappointing but business is business..

Please enlighten me as to how playing this thing in your shop would change my mind from buying the above?

Does it somehow change my opinion of it?

For more conventional consoles I wouldnt usually bother playing them in-store, but for something so drastically different like the wii I'd like to try before I buy. It aint just another updated console, its a completely different way of playing games, so playing that in-store might change your opinion of it.

Exactly, the Wii might just not be for you. Maybe you'd prefer the way games are now to Wii in the long run.

It's something that is required to try before buying IMO and in Nintendo's as they have a whole playing is believing thing in America at the moment.
