A play charting major historical events and figures in the Newmarket on Fergus area, by internationally renowned playwright Miriam Gallagher is set to be produced in County Clare this December. And in an effort to emphasise the play’s local context, the producers of ‘The Gold of Traderee’ are inviting interested actors, costume makers, musicians and set designers to take part. A registration and workshops open day will take place in the Newmarket on Fergus Community Hall on Saturday next, October 7th.

Waterford-born Playwright, novelist & screenwriter Miriam Gallagher is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and is best known for her novel ‘Song for Salamander’ and her play ‘Fancy Footwork’. Since 1983, over twenty of her plays have been performed in Ireland, Europe, USA and Canada and her work translated into Irish, Dutch, Finnish and Russian. Ms. Gallagher wrote ‘The Gold of Traderee’ in 2004 after being commissioned to do so by Clare County Council under the ‘Per Cent for Arts Scheme’. This December’s production of the play, meanwhile, will be directed by Jenny Walsh Bassett who will be assisted by Peggy Coyne.

According to Siobhan Mulcahy, Arts Officer with Clare County Council, “This Saturday’s open day is being held so people can register their interest in taking part in the play while they may also meet the people involved and participate in acting workshops. The organisers are looking for those interested in acting, but also musicians, costume makers and set designers. No experience is necessary so anyone interested in participating in the project is invited to attend.”

Registration and Workshops will take place in the Newmarket on Fergus Community Hall on Saturday, October 7th at the following times:
    - Under 12's - 10.30am-Midday
    - 12–16yrs - Midday-1pm
    - Adults 2-4pm
    - Casting Call Backs - 4–6pm
