[Letter] Stereos on the Bus Eireanns

Anyone read that dude from Cavan's letter to the independent today complaining about the volume and content of a radio show on the Bus Eireann bus he was on?

I gather that unlike dublin bus, bus eireann buses are fitted with the radio as well as the PA amp. I've been on a couple up and down and they've played either nothing, or else the GAA match on sundays (when i've done most return journeys) or Today FM.

Is there any guidelines on what's put on? What do drivers generally like to put on? I think it's great to have the radio, as long as it's not blasting it out - then people who want to sleep/listen to walkman can do so too!

When I'm driving a bus, I am always conscious of not annoying passengers. I usually put on something fairly neutral like RTE Radio 1 and keep the volume fairly low. If I really want to hear something myself at higher volume (e.g. match commentry), I switch off the passenger speakers. I like listening to Lyric FM but am aware that it is not everyone's cup of tea. I would never put on stations like 104 FM or 98FM as I do not like to be subjected to them myself. (Yes, I'm biased).

PS - I've never been given any guidelines by my employer.

Good choice on the no-98FM Wishbone Ash!

It's a godsend when you realise you've no battery left in your MP3 as you pull out of busaras!

Thanks for the info, I'd hoped that the company hadn't banned the use of the stereo or anything!

So long as it's not the Adrian Kennedy phone show, so beloved of taxi drivers!

What I hate about radios on busses is that they're usually low enough to make an audible noise but not high enough to hear what's actually being played so it just ends up being an irritating noise.

Years ago I travelled from Limerick to Cahir and the driver played his favourite "1,257 Best-known Tipperary Songs". My brain was in goo when I got off...

I normally find its 2FM on the donegal express although the volume tends to be fairly low... it doesnt irritate me in the slightest.
