    Hey guys,

I just read the new komplett special and theres an upgrade kit that looks pretty good to me.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED w/fan (info)
    ABIT AB9, P965, Socket-775, GbLAN, ATX, 6xSATAII, DDR2, Firewire, PCI-Ex16
    OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 EL XTC 1024MB Kit, DDR2, 240 Pin, 800Mhz (4-5-4-15)
Antistatic Wrist band Blue including ground cord

Of course it would be better without the wrist band (which is 8 feckin euro) but for E597.99, is there anything I should know about before buying it?

Seems a reasonable enough deal. I priced the same kit on tekheads (UK) with slightly slower RAM and it worked out a couple of euro more expensive. I've never had any problems dealing with Komplett either. I too was thinking of going down the Conroe route, but decided to go with an AMD X2 instead. The Conroe upgrade would have cost me 550 or so, the AMD upgrade (to an X2 4200) cost me 240. That included a new motherboard, OEM processor and Arctic Freezer heatsink - I could reuse my existing RAM. I used the savings to splash out on a new video card :D

Words to the wise , the core 2 duo is a marvel of modern processor technology , it comes from a 65nm wafer fab line , essentially what this means is that individual circuit elements get smaller , before 65nm there was 90nm and next up its 45nm.

While this is brilliant in terms of performance per watt , etc, it also makes the CPU itself extremely sensitive to ESD damage ,and this ESD sensitivity will get worse not better as elements become smaller still , never before have ESD straps been included in upgrade packs and they are not there for nothing.

Now ESD is an unpredictable thing , while handling you may or may not damage the processor , but if you do use the strap , you definitely wont damage the processor !!

Anyone handling a core 2 duo should just use the strap , RMA routines are never pleasant , so just use it and stay happy !!

Get the strap , clip it to a radiator , put the CPU in the socket , put the board in the case , unclip the strap . Thats it , believe me lads , with these processors , you need to do this.

mmmm ... did someone learn an expensive lesson ?

i use a hideous industrial static strap & workmat i got years ago on a compaq server course (remember them ?) ... it looks naff, and gives my mates ammo for slagging ...but i've never lost a component to static charge in 10 years of bodging ... have to agree whole heartedly with mathias ...

    get yer strap on lads!
