i got a mini tripod at the weekend and put my newish dslr on it , and then phone rang -- camera seemed relativly balanced -- then thump , the tripod gave way and the camera fell from a 4 ft table -- slammed the phone down -- took off the lens put it back on -- and took a few photos -- it was acting weird no auto flash and slow release -- this was due to camera setting get switched from auto -- when i switched back to auto -- it seemed to work as good as -- have i had a lucky escape or is there anything i should look out for -- i've had a few cheapish cameras and never dropped them before - so i was really pissed off , and particularly with the poor balancing of the mini tripod - or am i just lucky ?

does it rattle when shook? If not, guess you were lucky! No more cheap tripods please!

Instead of the mini-tripods there are beanbags known as "pod" which screw onto the bottom of the camera. At £20 or so, they are super. And cannot fall :-)

Luckily it seams ok, gave it a bit of a shake while it wasnt pure silence , nothing that i would call a rattle could be heard.
I plan to use camera a bit tomorrow , that will be the real test , but fingers crossed seams ok . Not sure if nikon would cover it to fix , following a drop --

Sounds like you had a lucky escape. SLRs even with small leght lenses are a bit unstable on a mini tripod. I've used one a few times as it was better than nothing, but I was too nervous to let it stand without holding the tripod down

Where did you get the mini tripod from and what applications do you see it being used in??

Got it in the camera shop on Grafton st. 20 euros --
i planned to use for taking night shots , as my hands arent the steadiest , but will not use it again without at least one hand stabilising it !
