Sky+ Box

Is it possible to buy a Sky+ box and just connect it up to the dish?

I have a Sky box at the moment and want to get Sky+ but don't fancy ordering from Sky and having to stay at home from next Friday til Christmas waiting on the "engineers" to arrive and plug it in!

You need a QUAD LNB and a second cable.

Your card needs upgraded to a Sky+ sub, or the box does not record.

Sky+ and Sky HD has a permenent recording rental. No sub, no recording.

Yes you can buy and connect the box yourself. You can use the existing digibox for BBC/ITV/Sky News etc on 3rd connection of the QUAD LNB.

And if you have 2 Sky Premium channels or more, the €15 montly Sky+ fee is waived.

I haven't got around to getting Sky+ yet but could anyone tell me the price of a box from Sky? I can set it up myself.

A new digibox from a retailer will prob cost about €199 but you can get cheap second hand ones on ebay or buy and sell.

Yes, Sky Movies 1 and Sky Movies 2 would be classed as 2 Premium Channel Packs.

Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 are the 2 other Premium packs. So you can choose 2 out of the 4 to get the Sky+ features free.

You're not serious? A friend just ordered Sky last week and is getting it installed on Tuesday. I looked on the net and all I could find was £50 Marks and Spencers vouchers for introducing on the UK so didn't bother. :(

Is there any chance I can still take advantage of the offer even though he has ordered already and got his viewing card, etc. in the post? I know it's a long shot...

Its possible - tell him to contact sky asap and say to them thet he forgot to mention the friend that recommended him - you will have to give him your account number also to quote to them.
Might just get away with it

Cheers, I'll give it a try.

I phoned them up and they told me he'd have to cancel the order and re-order Sky which I wasn't going to ask my friend to do. If anyone is ordering Sky this month let me know and I can introduce you. :) I wouldn't mind a free Sky+ box.

Slightly off topic - Am I right in thinking that Sky+ requires 2 separate cables running from the dish to the Sky+ box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Yes. it needs two coax. The LNB has either 4 or 8 outlets instead of one.

"eirebhoy": Lots of people would like a free Sky+ box. I don't think this is a fair thing to post.

Unfair on who? If someone is getting Sky then surely they might aswell use the introduce a friend offer. It's just like using a referral program when signing up to a website. Maybe we could open up a thread with a list of people looking to introduce someone. ;)

tbh, I was planning on getting Sky+ anyway and now that I found out I could have got one for free last week it'll feel like throwing away €200. :(

I'd say about everyone on the boards.ie with 2 premium channels (no extra sub to pay) and many people just Sky subscribers.

It's practically a Buy& Sell item. Essentially using free boards post to benefit Sky and yourself. I'm not sure it isn't against Boards Rules.

I ordered 200 Euro worth of ink and found AFTERWARD that any order over 150 Euro was eligiable for a free leather chair worth about 70 quid (reduced from several hundreds). But I had missed it.

It happens all the time. It is called MARKETING.

Anyone wanting over 150 Euro of Office supplies please contact me. I'd really like the Executive Swivel Leather Chair. :)

Anyone else see the problem here?

Don't see the problem myself. If there is something going free and someone is getting something that will avail someone else of getting the freebie whats the problem?

Cheers, I'll try that but I'm going to give the introduce a friend thing one last go. Does anyone know what a contract number is though?
Alternatively, once your friend is installed and enabled you can call us on 08702 412 939 and provide us with your friends address and both your contract numbers. We will send you your Marks & Spencer or free Sky + box voucher within 60 days of receipt of you and your friend’s details. For customers taking up our free Sky+ box offer, you will need to call Sky directly to arrange installation of your Sky+ box.

I also got an e-mail with:
Please contact our Introduce a Friend helpline on 1890 92 39 35 quoting your postal code along with your friend's name and both your contract numbers.

With the provision of your account details, one of our advisors will be able to identify if you are eligible to receive the Introduce a Friend promotion.
Ironically that is the first time I've seen an Irish Introduce a Friend number after ringing about 5 different UK numbers.

Your account number. and the serial number off their application form. Or Any number they get when they order.

This isn't the Buy & Sell zabbo. Adverts = banning. One warning.

Yes, your contract numbers are uhm, on the contract you signed, or any letters they send out to you. But, failing that, the Viewing Card Number should suffice when ringing them.

Was just about to order Sky+ until you lads pointed out that if you dont have 2 or more premium channels it would be an extra €15. IF you did get the €15 waviered becuase you introduced a friend I presume this is just for the first year and after that you have to start paying the €15 a month for the Sky+ service.
Also noticed "Standard installation is €75,or free when you get Sky Tv in aonther room with Sky multiroom-your second box is free". I presume the second box is the standard sky box and not a sky+ box.
IF you had sky+ could you watch a recorded program played back in your second room or would you need extra cabling

I got the contract numbers and phoned the Introduce a friend line this morning. He took the 2 account numbers, the 2 addresses and said there'll be an engineer out to install the box in the next 28 days. I wish it was as simple as that to find bloody info on this offer. :)

Its €75 installation. I presume you can get the box and install it yourself but I decided to let someone else do it as my current Quad LNB is crap and I'll ask the engineer to re-align the satellite (if thats possible or even necesarry?). Its just that my signal strength has dropped since it was first installed.

/edit - I know this is probably taking it a bit too far but do you think the engineer would replace the cable from my satellite to my PC as I think it's damaged (the PC card isn't working)? I'd be willing to pay him an extra few euro but it shouldn't take 2 minutes as all the holes are there already.

    Cheers.
