Are you using a download manager? If so, I'd suggest removing it.

If not I'd suggest reinstalling IE or switching to firefox.

Is your motherboard of the NVIDIA nForce 3 or 4 variety ?

i hadn't a download manager but installed download accelerator plus form speedbit.com to see if it would remedy the problem but it obviously didn't.

the problem happens within windows media player also. eg when i type a url in directly to wmp so thats why i was thinking it may not be an IE problem.

    could it possibly be hardware??

a problem with one of the controllers for example

yeah i think it might be a nvidia 4 compatible...is there a known issue with that

nForce 4 boards have a nasty bug in them, the integrated ethernet controller when using TCP offloading corrupts the data.

The solution was to disable TCP offloading or use a driver from 6.66 or later as those builds contain the fix (the fix being NVIDIA disable TCP offloading altogether).

The 6.86 drivers for the AMD nForce 4 can be gotten at this link, so install the ethernet driver in those. Other versions can be gotten on NV's site for other nForce 4 variants.

Didi you also install the NAM (Network Access Manager) what NVIDIA calls the ActiveArmour Firewall ?

One other possible cause is that a while back a dodgy driver somehow got onto Windows Update for Marvell ethernet controllers (used on some nForce boards) after installing this driver update it would corrupt data over the link, a more recent driver update fixes it or roll back to an earlier one.

I had issues with the nVidia Firewall also and disabled it, worked a treat.
