    Mandatory Alcohol Testing Legislation

Statement from the Road Safety Authority

    Friday 29th September 2006.

The Road Safety Authority has been in contact with the Department of Transport regarding the Mandatory Alcohol Testing legislation and we have been advised that there is a typographical error in the current act specifically relating to individuals who refuse breath tests.

The RSA is satisfied that in general the current legislation is robust and that the Minister for Transport is taking all necessary steps to copper fasten the legislation.

The Garda National Traffic Bureau has advised the Road Safety Authority that the issue with MAT legislation will have no affect on their drink driving enforcement activity. They have also confirmed that they will be conducting mandatory alcohol testing checkpoints nationwide over the weekend targeting drink driving as usual. The Gardai have also pointed out that failure or refusal to give a breath test at road side carries a €5,000 fine and or six months imprisonment.

The Road Safety Authority would like to take this opportunity to reiterate its message that drinking and driving is a killer behaviour. So, remember before you decide to drink and drive think about the tragic consequences you could be forcing on others.

    NEVER, EVER DRINK AND DRIVE.

    Ends
