Songs of Fath and Devotion is my favorite Depece Mode album
They have 12 studio albums (I Think)

Music for the Masses is other good place to start

They have 2 greatest hits albums, the best one in my opinion would be the 86-98 one , the older stuff is way too cheesey for me

The new one is more than decent ("Playing the angel") and their best selling album to date is: "Violator" from 1990.

The best DM albums imo are:
    1. music for the masses
    2. violator
    3. black celebration

these along with the singles 81-85 are essential. songs of faith and devotion is pretty good too.

Can't go wrong with any of these. Personally, I don't care much for compilations/greatest hits so if you like what you hear then I would fully indulge in their back catalouge.

Music for the Masses is only 7.99 in HMV at the mo.

I`ll have to check that out, cheers.

Bah I left the HMV sale too late!, all the cds were gone bar speak and spell. Is that one any good?, I`m familiar with any of the songs on it.

Is there any second hand cd shops?, I think theres somewhere in temple bar.

City Discs in Temple Bar (beside TBMC) has a lot of second hand stuff and the last time I was there they had a good bit of Depeche Mode. However, if you look in a few record stores you'll find the classic DM albums cheap enough new, tenner tops for the likes of Violator. Sometimes the best of albums are cheap too.

Aye, music for the masses is great and Ultra has a cool edgy sound to it.

Being hooked on DM since 81, I'd go

    1. Ultra
    2. Violator - although these first two switch around a good bit in my mind
    3. Speak & Spell - when Vince Clarke was with the group
    4. Music for the Masses - the US breakthrough album
    5. 101 (live CD) - cemented the US breakthrough

Also, their back catalog is being remastered and re-released, wouldn't bother with getting the new ones remastered but the earlier ones, MY GOD, the sound improvment is unbelievable.
I would highly advise to stay away from second hand copies of the earlier albums and go for the remasters.

Oh, and they have a new greatest hits out soon with a new single "martyre", personally hate hit compilations but there you go

    Cheers for the help everyone.

I know what you mwan by compilations, they just don`t "feel" right.

    .

    Exciter

    re: remasters

    Speak and Spell
    A Broken Frame
    Some Great Reward
    Music For The Masses
    Violator
    Songs Of Faith And Devotion

    have been done so far.

avoid buying them here - prices are a rip-off - up to euro 30.
    online is best.

    101 has been remastered too

I noticed the absurd prices alright!. I`m wary of buying cds/dvds online as I am always paranoid that they are forgeries and therefore poor quality. What would be a good site to get them cheap?.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Any reputable site (amazon, cd universe, cd wow, play) will not be selling forgeries. Also try their own label, Mute. Sometimes has sales on DM.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

I picked up the deluxe Speak and Spell and Music for the Masses off CDWOW for €14 each. Don't go near HMV, Golden Discs, and the like.

I quite liked Playing the Angel.

Didn't give the other albums that much of a chance though. I need to re-listen to them

Did you see Depeche Mode won Best Group at the MTV Awards? Hilarious - a band that's been around 25 years, sold 70 million odd albums, played to 2.5 million people in the last year and now the joke that is MTV decides to award them.
Not that the MTV Awards actually mean anything, I just find it really funny given the Pussycat Dolls were in the same category!

(As an aside, new single Martyr is out now - far from their best but it's not bad at all. Album recommendations would be Music for the Masses, Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion and Playing the Angel)

I really like Martyr actually. Nice and gritty :)
