I went into work thrusday morning not feeling the best, about an hour in i felt even worse, so my boss (bless his soul) gave me a lift to the doctor.

My symptoms were mild nausea, headache, severe sore throat and dizzyness.

the prognosis, a viral infection in my throat, with a touch of high blood pressure (i have to go back for that)

The doctor gave me a prescription of Stemetil and said it would help with the nausea and the rest i should just keeep eating and stay wrapped up.

    YES MAM!

I woke up friday morning feeling 10 times worse, thats when i decided to look into my little pill shaped friends  i have one of the rarest side effects, a mouth full of sores!.
    Rare

Abdominal or stomach pains; aching muscles and joints; agitation, bizarre dreams, excitement, or trouble in sleeping; bleeding or bruising (unusual); chest pain; clumsiness; confusion (mild); constipation (severe); convulsions (seizures); dark urine; fever and chills; hair loss; headaches; hot, dry skin or lack of sweating; itchy skin (severe); muscle weakness; nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; pain in joints; prolonged, painful, inappropriate erection of the penis; redness of hands; shivering; skin discoloration (tan or blue-gray); sore throat and fever; sores in mouth; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness; yellow eyes or skin

most of my other symptoms have pretty much cleared up.
its a pain in the hole not being able to eat tho due to the pain in my hole (the mouth)

Added to that on further reading about the drug it says its for severe nausea, but other than that its a HIGH RISK anti-psychotic. i know im strange but i dont think i come across psychotic.

So back to the doctor tomorrow.

has anyone else ever been prescribed this drug and if so did you suffer any side effects?

If you want medical advice: go to a doctor (Don't self-diagnose based on information on t'Interwebulator, and most medication has weird and scary possible side-effects).
If you want legal advice: go to a lawyer.
I somehow doubt A.H. has many of either of these: [strike]Thread closed.[/strike]
Thread re-opened on the basis that there was no request for specific medical or legal advice.

Side effects listed for drugs are listed in order of frequency and those you refer to are rare side effects. I have consulted the BNF and can't see any specific reference to mouth ulcers.

Centrally acting anti-sickness medications work by altering brain receptors and in high doses some of them are used as anti-psychotic medicines, at much lower doses augment the nausea centre in the brain and reduce symptoms of sickness and vomiting. This was a useful side effect noted when these drugs were developed as anti-psychotics and are marketed at much lower doses as anti-nausea.

You were prescribed 5mg three times a day, for treating psychoses between 25mg to 100mg are used, which is many orders more than you were prescribed.

I cannot find a specific reference to mouth ulcers as a side effect of stemetil, however aphthous mouth ulcers are a common side effect of any illness or being run down.

You should see your doctor about these ulcers and see if he/she believes they may be related to stemetil.

Side effects that are more common from stemetil are infact dystonias (abnormal muscle spasms), tremors and drowsiness. These tend to only occur in the elderly and the young and then, infrequently.

i went back to the doctor and she couldnt beleive the state of my mouth, they are on my tongue, on all my gums, and on the inside of my cheek and palate.

i was prescribed 2.5mg hydrocortisone to treat the ulcers (not helping so far 2 days in) and 500mg flucillin because she thinks the ulcers are infected.

so far there has been no visible improvement.

Have you contacted your doctor to let her know your symptoms haven't improved at all? After 2 days on hydrocortisone you should have seen some improvement to this reaction!

I'd be more concerned with why you were prescribed an anti-nausea drug for mild nausea? I've only ever had an injection to stop vomiting once in my entire life and that was when I used to have the most horrendous sickness when I had my period...I had been puking all day in college and then someone found me passed out in the bathroom, the doctor was called because I literally couldn't stop getting sick and I was green in the face so he gave me an anti-emetic injection. I actually have never been that ill ever since!

well im pretty much better now, still have 5 ulcers but they are clearing up. i stopped taking the hydrocortisone as i couldnt take vitamins with it and i was getting weak. instead i gargled with aspirin, worked a lot quicker than the steroids.

I use stemetil myself for vertigo caused by a middle ear infectionm and have never had a problem with it - i guess its like everything else side effects are rare but do happen - I hope you get it cleared up soon. I got some stuff before for mouth ulcers to numb them and relieve the pain - think it was called anbesol but not sure?
