the noise out of it is very loud i have to turn my tv up quite a bit to get over the sound

its like somthing wrong with the fan

i would love to know what a typical xbox 360 sounds like

Mine doesnt make that much noise. Certainly not noticable unless I am listening to it. I would bring it back.

The fans are quite noisy in mine but I only really notice it once I turn it off and then wonder why everything has gone so quite. My other PC is more noisy though when I turn that one on.

If you bought it around launch, then the noise that you're hearing is probably the disc drive.
The initial drives are very loud, and a few months back Microsoft changed them for different, quieter models.
If it's really loud, ring Microsoft, and they should change it for you.

mine is very loud too as it is an early model, i think i will ring MS and see if they will swap it out since it was produced in 05 hence is part of their free repairs scheme :)

They probably will want the hard drive back.
I don't know what everyone elses expeerience is, but they took my hard drive back, and when it was returned, my saved games were still there.

how long does it take to get the xbox 360 back from microsoft or do i get a new one ??

MS don't usually take the HDD unless they suspect that it could be part of the problem as they will usually send out a refurbed product. Takes about 7 days afaik.

Microsoft have an amazing customer service department.
They got a bit of slack after the initial launch, but that was because of the initial volume of problems, they just got a bit swamped.
It normally takes 2-3 days for the courier to arrive at your place, a day or two to get to Manchester, about 2-3 days there, and then a day or two back.
    (That's all working days only.)
If it's only something like the disc drive, they'll just replace it and send you back the same console.

What did you say to them on the phone, and did they ask for the HD too?

i just told him about the noise

i was talking to american bloke, very nice bloke really helpful
and he told me to keep the hd

cant wait for it to be fixed

    thanks lads for the advice

Mine's pretty noisy too - couldn't imagine watching a DVD on it never mind a HD-dvd one! Did they want proof of purchase as I haven't a clue where the receipt is?

The HD-DVD drive is a 2x drive (360 one is 12x) so it should be nearly silent with HD-DVD's.

Wouldn't be silent with my 360 most of the noise seems to be from the fans

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

I think I might give them a call too, I have a launch 360 and the noise is very loud from it, crtainly the fans are loud it but the drive is even louder.

Plus that I have to keep the doors of my entertainment centre open to stop it from getting too toasty.

Having said that I have not had any problems with it apart from the odd lock-up.

Also I have a fear that since it is a launch model that one day I'll get the Ring of Death and the warrenty will be up.

I presume they just take the serial number rather then needing a reciept.

Hi,Just a quick question if you dont mind, does the xbox 360 play hd movies and other formats svcd, divx etc using dvd -r?Can it be used as a standalone dvd player?Thinking of getting one for use with the dell tv we all bought last year!!

    regards,

    kieran

If you bought the xbox at launch, then it was before Jan 06.
Microsoft have issued a (supposedly) infintie warrantee on any console bought before Jan 06 because of all of the problems the expeerienced.
Basically, it doesn't matter if the warrantee is up, they'll replace it.

    The HD-dvd drive is seperate.
The drive in the console only plays dvd's, and won't play svcds, although it will play dvd-r discs.
The seperate hd-dvd drive should play svcd's aswell.

That is interesting I have read about that a few times but I didn't pick it up that way, even though I thought it was more for the USA as they only got a 60 warranty on the console.

Is there anywhere Microsoft has confirmed that the warranty is indefinate for all launch consoles worldwide.

Did you try ringing MS? They can't do much to sort it out for you if you don't talk to them. Turnaround time (in total, for everything) was 1 week for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭00sully

eek! im about to send mine off to ups 2moro - same problem as headshots - dont think ill be getting a first gen ps3 thats for sure.

but waiting for my 360 will make SC DA and PES6 all the more sweeter!

also, it seems earlier problems had a quicker turn around time as when i spoke to MS they said 15 working days - 3 weeks :/

I got my 360 in may and it still sounds like a 747 - maybe it was an early model. Its also prone to the odd lockup - always same error - disc dirty even though the disc is perfect

I guess it might be worth calling them...

i rang up microsoft today and got them to sort out where my package is

its been in germany where they fix the 360s since 16/10 [ie microsoft have it]

ups havent been updating there website at all

    hopefully ill have soon

really want to play the new splinter cell game

    just update this

guess what i finally got my 360 back today and guess what its ****ing not working

    its a disgrace

the xbox 360 i got is new a new one

the problem is it doesnt read the disks

are Microsoft that bad that they dont test systems before they send them off

i rather not send it back to them
could i sort this problem out with the store i bought it from Xtra vision

I got my 6th one last week and after 20 minutes of playing it the thing crashes and I get a lovely pattern on the screen.

It was a refurbished one from the German repair center and I was told I was getting a new one.

I called them about it and they said send it back and they will send me a new machine this week.

So yesterday I got all my 360 games together and traded them in against a PSP :D

Does anyone want to buy a new machine at the end of the week ??

7 machines? You sure you're not wrapping it up in a plastic bag or something :s

I wouldn't bother with a PSP btw, theres a few big games out now for it but mine is still spending most of its time in a drawyer. Like most people PSP's on here :/

They kept sending me refurbished ones from the first faulty batch from late last year. Each one I had displayed different problems.

I got a PSP with GTA and it's quite good, no 360 replacement, but it'll do until next year when MS get their act together.

doh! i sent mine in cuz of the dvd drive noise - hopefully i wont get a refurb one with more problems - not confident now to be honest :/

killzone on psp is class - get it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭00sully

well i got mine back yesterday (actually ups came on monday but i wasnt there) so my turnaround time was less than 2 weeks.

i cant discern whether the dvd drive is less noisy tho - i think maybe a fraction. which dvd drive is less noisy? the sammy or hitachi?

all games work properly and i think its the same one i sent away! (nothin wrong with it except noise since launch)

so i guess im in the minority
