Beauty is the key to success

Well this came up in a conversation yesterday, and it's stuck in my mind since. What lots of people say is, well look at celebrities. Sure most are somewhat beautiful but there is alot of ugly buggers out there that are successful.
So what I'm wondering is what you think. Is it true that in order to be successful you have to be beautiful? Or do you think it doesn't matter what you look like.

Look at this guy! He's doing quite well with himself, despite the fact that he's a mutant!

Mick Jagger is proof of the opposite, isn't he?

And although I adore Uma Therman as an actress, she's not particularly beautiful (I'd say striking is a better phrase for her).

I think the world is finally starting to change away from that perspective. People get where they need to be on merit and brains more often these days and that is fine.

That's not to say there isn't still SOME of that going around. Two women both up for the same job - both with the same qualifications, one beautiful, one average. We all know which one gets the promotion... the one with the biggest boobs! :)

Years ago, I read in something (may have been the Little, Brown Book of Anecdotes) that if you are badly injured and admitted to A&E, the emergency medics are more likely to try harder, for longer, to resuscitate you if you're beautiful.

(They had an actual statistic, e.g ten times more likely or somesuch, but I can't remember it and I can't find it on google.)

Being tall is more important. It's very difficult to take a midget seriously.

Now that you mention it, I think there is a prerequisite (at least in my neighbourhood) that all EMT's MUST be gorgeous. Working in a hospital, I'm quite thankful for that. Their presence makes the drama and seriousness of an ambulance patient a bit easier to grasp.

I think it depends on what you want to achieve, sometimes people can find beauty threatening for lots of different reasons.

In a way I think it is better to be 'attractive' not drop dead gorgeous, in order to get on in life. If you're physically attractive people will be drawn to you but not threatened by you, it gives you more scope to influence people.

Obviously this is unless you want to go into a profession like modelling. With acting, I'd say being attractive is enough - but charisma/presence/intelligence is everything.

Yup . . . sure is tough being beautiful :p but somebody has to do it!

Yeah, but it may also stunt your growth, its only skin deep remember, and it fades...There's nothing sadder than an individual used to gliding through life on the strength of their looks, suddenly realising that the spell is fading and they may have to start using assets like personality, charm and communication skills which they've sadly neglected...

Was it Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield, one of those fifties starlets, who said that all their beauty got them was an extra five minutes in the casting room....

In politics honesty is the key to success.

Once you can fake it, you're away.

No but I am saying that even with all her cash she probably still has to resort to DIY.

Confidence is much more important for success than beauty, though a modicum of talent and ability is also useful - but not always necessary.

In research done in some university somewhere they got studetns to rate lecturers looks and teaching effectiveness, the better looking lecturers were always the best teachers.

...or were perceived to be the best teachers.
Did they correlate it with actual results/improvements made?
