Sister wants a cheapo laptop for just word and internet type stuff. looking at the dell inspiron 1300 for €479 but it only has 256mb ram. Is that still too little for Xp home or would it be ok for what she'll be doing?

It is the minimum that you should get but you can certainly run XP home on it. Get the minimum from Dell (256mb) and buy another 256mb of RAM elsewhere, install it yourself to save yourself money. Dell memory upgrades are too dear.

Just barely enough. Word is definitely not the world's lightest application!

Add €70 and get a lot more for your money: 512MB instead of 256; 60GB disk instead of 40GB; a bigger screen; a DVD-RW drive instead of CD/DVD combo.

Shame on them for the price of the RAM when upgrading from 256mb. :)

Its not too little if you run a light AV and dont have loads of crap loading everytime WinXP starts up.

I have 256MB inside a family computer and it works perfectly fine with Office2003/Internet/Audio/Video for the general light user.

Your sister should be fine with 256MB.

Depending on the type , a 256 MB stick of SO-DIMM ram for your laptop can be had for as little as 29.99 from komplett.

So try the 256 and if things are slow for you then buy the extra ram , dont get it from dell , looks like they are taking at least a 100% markup.
Ram is easy to install yourself , just clips in !!
